Yu-Chang Highway Introduction
Yuli-Changbin Highway is part of Taiwan Route 30, stretching from Andong in Yuli Township, Hualien County to Ningpu in Changbin Township, Taitung County. The highway was originally constructed during the late Qing Dynasty, based on the ancient Andong Trail, and was further improved during the Japanese colonial period. After the war, construction continued, and it was not completed and opened to traffic until 2007. Spanning 16.22 kilometers, it is the only highway that tunnels through the Central Mountain Range. The route offers breathtaking scenery and wide vistas, allowing travelers to enjoy the valley views of the coastal mountains while overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean. It is popular among cyclists and road trip enthusiasts. Additionally, local farmers often sell their homegrown produce along the way, along with food and coffee from mobile food trucks, making it an ideal spot to sit on the observation decks, sip coffee, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Upon reaching the Changbin Township exit, visitors can also connect to Wushi Point for a close encounter with the intertidal zone ecology. Accommodations along Taiwan Route 11 offer seaside homestays, perfect for relaxing by the sea and watching the sunrise.
