Green Island Prison Introduction
Green Island once held the record for the highest prison density in the world, featuring various types of prisons on this small island. Green Island Prison, a subordinate department of the Ministry of Justice's Correctional Administration, is a high-security isolation facility and serves as the last line of defense among Taiwan's prisons. It currently houses serious criminal offenders who have been sentenced to heavy penalties. The prison covers an area of 3.7 hectares and includes an office building for internal and external operations, the Rixin Hall, as well as solitary confinement cells, dormitory rooms, isolation wards, a calm room, a workshop, and a kitchen. Due to its specific management characteristics, the prison accommodates the most unruly, falsely accused, and hardest-to-reform inmates from various prisons in Taiwan, drawing special attention. Today, while the atmosphere at Green Island Prison remains serious and tense, it also welcomes visitors who wish to take photos and purchase souvenirs crafted by the inmates. Made with care, these unique items reflect a distinct quality, thanks to the craftsmanship of the inmates.
