Green Island Prison Introduction
Green Island was once the island with the highest prison density in the world, featuring different types of prisons within its small area. Green Island Prison, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice's Agency of Corrections, is a high-security isolation prison and serves as the last line of defense among Taiwan's prisons. It currently houses inmates sentenced to severe penalties. The prison covers an area of 3.7 hectares and consists of two office buildings (one inside and one outside), one day-new building, as well as single cells, dormitory cells, isolation rooms, a calming room, a workshop, and a kitchen. Due to its specific characteristics in managing and isolating inmates, the prison is particularly noted for housing those deemed difficult to manage, including incorrigible offenders, individuals who make false accusations or have a history of misconduct. Today, while there remains a serious and tense atmosphere at Green Island Prison, it also welcomes tourists to take photos and purchase souvenirs crafted by the inmates, which are made with care and are of unique quality thanks to the efforts of the inmates.
