Sleeping Beauty Rock Introduction
Green Island is an island created by volcanic activity. Scholars speculate that the eastern part of the island was once the site of an ancient volcanic crater. In addition to volcanic neck remnants, the varying degrees of weathering on the crater walls have formed a series of geological landscapes around it. From the Xiaochangcheng at Haishenping, there is a geological feature resembling a sleeping woman lying on the shore, known as "Sleeping Beauty Rock," which, along with the nearby "Pug Rock," is referred to as "Sleeping Beauty and Pug." Various legends surround Sleeping Beauty and Pug. Some say that the loyal pug guards the sleeping beauty, who has fallen into a deep sleep due to a witch's curse. Others tell of a loving couple, the pug and the sleeping beauty, who were turned into stone by a deity due to their offense. Another tale suggests that after a big quarrel, Sleeping Beauty and Pug decided to sleep separately and ignored each other. A more interesting tale says that Sleeping Beauty was originally a flying fish fairy who, upon discovering a stray pug on Green Island, transformed into human form to live with it. However, one day, while playing by the sea, the flying fish fairy accidentally reverted to her original form due to a wave, and the pug bit her. When the Jade Emperor heard of this, he turned the flying fish fairy into the current Sleeping Beauty for breaking celestial rules, and the pug, having bitten the fairy by mistake, was transformed into a pug to guard her. From then on, dogs no longer liked to eat fish.
