Sleeping Beauty Rock Introduction
Green Island is an island formed by volcanic activity, with its eastern coast theorized by scholars to be the site of an ancient explosion crater. In addition to volcanic neck remnants, the varying degrees of weathering of the crater walls have also created a series of geological landscapes in the surrounding area. From the Little Great Wall at Haisanping, one can view a geological formation on the coastline that resembles a woman lying asleep, known as "Sleeping Beauty Rock." Alongside it is the "Pug Rock," together referred to as "Sleeping Beauty and the Pug." There are various legends regarding Sleeping Beauty and the Pug; some say that a loyal pug guards the sleeping beauty, who is under a witch's curse and cannot awaken. Others tell of a loving couple—Sleeping Beauty and the Pug—who were turned to stone as punishment for offending a deity. Another tale suggests that after a fierce argument, they decided to sleep separately and ignored each other. A more interesting version claims that Sleeping Beauty was originally a flying fish fairy. One day, while passing Green Island, she discovered a stray pug and transformed into human form to care for it. However, while playing by the seaside, the fairy accidentally turned back into her original form due to a wave, causing the pug to bite her. When this news reached the Jade Emperor, the fairy was punished for violating heavenly rules and was transformed into the present-day Sleeping Beauty, while the pug, having mistakenly bitten the fairy, was turned into the pug that now stands guard beside her, leading to pugs no longer liking fish.
