Sleeping Beauty Rock Introduction
Green Island is an island formed by volcanic activity. Scholars speculate that the eastern part was once home to an ancient volcanic crater. Besides the remnants of the volcanic neck, the varying degrees of weathering of the crater walls have created a series of geological landscapes in the surrounding area. From the small Great Wall at Haisan Ping, one can overlook a geological feature on the coastline resembling a woman sleeping on the shore, known as "Sleeping Beauty Rock," which, along with the nearby Pug Rock, is referred to as "Sleeping Beauty and Pug." There are various legends concerning Sleeping Beauty and Pug. Some say the loyal Pug guards the Sleeping Beauty, who is trapped in eternal slumber due to a witch's curse. Others suggest that the Pug and Sleeping Beauty were a loving couple who offended a deity and were cruelly turned to stone to stand guard on Green Island. Another tale tells of a quarrel between Sleeping Beauty and Pug, leading them to sleep separately and ignore each other. A more interesting version claims that Sleeping Beauty was originally a flying fish fairy. One day, while passing by Green Island, she found a stray Pug and transformed into human form to keep each other company. However, while playing by the sea, the flying fish fairy accidentally reverted to her original form due to a wave, and the Pug bit her. When this reached the ears of the Jade Emperor, the flying fish fairy was punished for violating heavenly rules and was transformed into the present-day Sleeping Beauty, while the Pug, having mistakenly bitten the fairy, was also transformed into a Pug to guard by her side, and since then, dogs have not liked to eat fish.
