Sleeping Beauty Rock Introduction
Green Island is an island formed by volcanic activity, with part of its eastern coast believed by scholars to have once been the site of an ancient volcanic crater. In addition to the volcanic neck remnants, the varying degrees of weathering of the crater walls have created a series of geological landscapes in the vicinity. From the small great wall at Sea Cucumber Plain, one can gaze into the distance and spot a geological formation resembling a woman lying on the coast, known as "Sleeping Beauty Rock." Alongside it is the Pug Rock, together referred to as "Sleeping Beauty and Pug." There are various legends surrounding Sleeping Beauty and Pug. One tale suggests that a loyal pug guarded Sleeping Beauty, who was cursed by a witch and fell into a deep slumber. Another version claims that Pug and Sleeping Beauty were a loving couple who offended a deity and were cruelly transformed into stone to stand watch on Green Island. An interesting account tells of Sleeping Beauty, originally a flying fish fairy, who, while passing by Green Island, found a stray pug and transformed into a human to keep the pug company. However, one day while playing by the sea, the flying fish fairy accidentally transformed back into her original form due to a splash of waves, and the pug bit her. When this incident reached the Jade Emperor, the flying fish fairy was punished for her transgression and transformed into today's Sleeping Beauty, while the pug, having mistakenly bitten the flying fish fairy, was turned into Pug to guard beside her. Since then, dogs have lost their liking for fish.
