Pug Rock Introduction
Green Island is an island formed by volcanic activity. Scholars have speculated that the eastern part contains remnants of an ancient volcanic crater, and the varying degrees of weathering of the crater walls have resulted in a series of geological formations in the surrounding area. From the vantage point of the Small Great Wall at Haisanping, a geological formation resembling a lying Pug can be seen off the coast, known as "Pug Rock." This rock is often mentioned alongside the Sleeping Beauty Rock, collectively referred to as "Sleeping Beauty and Pug." There are various legends about Sleeping Beauty and Pug; some say that the loyal Pug guards the Sleeping Beauty, who was cursed by a witch and remains in eternal slumber, while others suggest that Pug and Sleeping Beauty were a loving couple who angered the deities and were cruelly turned to stone to stand guard on Green Island. Another tale tells of Sleeping Beauty and Pug getting into a fierce argument, leading them to sleep separately and ignore one another. An amusing version of the story suggests that Sleeping Beauty, originally a flying fish fairy, discovered a stray Pug while passing through Green Island and transformed into human form to keep it company. However, one day while playing by the sea, the flying fish fairy accidentally turned back into her original form when struck by a wave, and the Pug bit her. The incident reached the ears of the Jade Emperor, and as a punishment for breaking heavenly rules, the flying fish fairy was transformed into the Sleeping Beauty we know today. Meanwhile, the Pug, having unwittingly bitten the fairy, was turned into a Pug to guard by her side, and from that day on, dogs have not liked eating fish anymore.
