Pug Rock Introduction
Green Island is an island formed by volcanic activity, with the eastern coast believed by scholars to have ancient volcanic craters. In addition to volcanic neck remnants, the varying degrees of weathering on the crater walls have resulted in a series of geological landscapes in the area. From the Small Great Wall at Hsiao Chang Chuan Ping, one can overlook a geological feature resembling a lying Pug, known as "Pug Rock," which, along with the nearby Sleeping Beauty Rock, is famously referred to as "Sleeping Beauty and the Pug." There are various legends about Sleeping Beauty and the Pug; one states that the loyal Pug guarded Sleeping Beauty, who fell into a slumber due to a witch's curse. Another tale suggests that the Pug and Sleeping Beauty were a loving couple who were cruelly turned into stone by the gods for offending them, standing guard on Green Island. A more humorous version tells that Sleeping Beauty was originally a flying fish fairy who discovered a stray Pug while passing through Green Island. She transformed into human form and lived with the Pug, but one day while playing by the sea, the flying fish fairy was accidentally splashed by a wave and reverted to her original form, whereupon the Pug bit her. This incident reached the Jade Emperor, who punished the flying fish fairy for breaking heavenly laws by turning her into the current Sleeping Beauty, while the Pug was transformed into a Pug guarding her, resulting in dogs disliking fish ever since.
