Pug Rock Introduction
Green Island is an island formed by volcanic activity, where the eastern part is speculated by scholars to be the site of an ancient volcanic crater. In addition to the remnants of volcanic necks, the varying degrees of weathering have created a series of geological landscapes in the surrounding area. From the Small Great Wall at Shiacunping, one can overlook a geological feature resembling a lying Pug, known as "Pug Rock," which is famously paired with the nearby Sleeping Beauty Rock, referred to as "Sleeping Beauty and Pug." There are various legends regarding Sleeping Beauty and Pug. Some say that the loyal Pug guards the Sleeping Beauty, who is cursed by a witch and unable to wake, while others suggest that Pug and Sleeping Beauty are a loving couple who, after offending a deity, were cruelly turned to stone to stand watch on Green Island. Another tale tells of a quarrel between Sleeping Beauty and Pug, resulting in them ignoring each other. A more interesting version claims that Sleeping Beauty was originally a flying fish fairy. One day, while passing by Green Island, she discovered a stray Pug and transformed into human form to keep him company. However, one day while playing by the seaside, the waves accidentally revealed her original form, and the Pug bit the flying fish fairy. When this reached the Jade Emperor, the flying fish fairy was punished for breaking heavenly laws and was transformed into today's Sleeping Beauty, while the Pug, due to the accidental bite, was turned into the Pug guarding her, which is why dogs no longer like to eat fish.
