Pug Rock Introduction
Green Island is an island formed by volcanic activity. Scholars speculate that the eastern coast was once home to an ancient volcanic crater, which not only has remnants of volcanic necks but also features a series of geological landscapes due to differing resistance to weathering of the crater wall. From the Little Great Wall at Haisheping, one can gaze out at a geological formation resembling a lying Pekingese, known as "Pekingese Rock," which, along with the nearby Sleeping Beauty Rock, is referred to as "Sleeping Beauty and Pekingese." There are various legends about Sleeping Beauty and Pekingese; some say the faithful Pekingese guards the Sleeping Beauty, who slumbers due to a witch's curse, while others claim that Pekingese and Sleeping Beauty were a loving couple who were cruelly turned to stone as punishment for offending the gods. Another tale suggests that Sleeping Beauty and Pekingese had a big quarrel and decided to sleep separately, ignoring each other from then on. A more interesting version tells of Sleeping Beauty, originally a flying fish fairy, who discovered a stray Pekingese while passing by Green Island. She transformed into a human and kept the Pekingese as company, but one day while playing by the sea, the flying fish fairy accidentally returned to her original form due to a wave, and the Pekingese bit her. When the Jade Emperor learned of this, the flying fish fairy was punished and transformed into the present-day Sleeping Beauty, while the Pekingese, having mistakenly bitten the fairy, was turned into a Pekingese to guard beside her, and from then on, dogs ceased to like eating fish.
