Pug Rock Introduction
Liuqiu is an island created by volcanic activity. Scholars speculate that the eastern coast once had an ancient volcanic crater. Besides remnants of volcanic necks, the varying weathering resistance of the crater walls has created a series of geological landscapes. From the sea cucumber platform, one can gaze at a geological structure resembling a lying Pug, known as "Pug Rock," which, along with the neighboring Sleeping Beauty Rock, is referred to as "Sleeping Beauty and Pug." There are various legends regarding Sleeping Beauty and Pug. Some say the loyal Pug is guarding Sleeping Beauty, who remains in a deep sleep due to a witch's curse. Others claim Pug and Sleeping Beauty were a loving couple but were cruelly turned to stone on Liuqiu for offending the deities. Another tale suggests that Sleeping Beauty and Pug had a fierce argument, thus each sleeping separately and ignoring the other. A more interesting account states that Sleeping Beauty was originally a flying fish fairy. One day, while passing Liuqiu, she found a stray Pug, transformed into human form, and cared for him. However, during a beach outing, the flying fish fairy accidentally got splashed by waves and reverted to her original form, which led to Pug biting her. This incident reached the ears of the Jade Emperor, and due to violating celestial laws, the flying fish fairy was transformed into the current Sleeping Beauty. Meanwhile, Pug was punished for the accidental bite and was turned into a Pug, keeping watch beside her, never again liking to eat fish.
