Pug Rock Introduction
Green Island is an island formed by volcanic activity, with scholars suggesting that the eastern coast was once the site of an ancient volcanic crater. In addition to the remnants of volcanic necks, the varying degrees of weathering of the crater wall have created a series of geological features in the surrounding area. From the viewpoint at Haisheping, one can see a geological feature resembling a lying Pug, known as "Pug Rock," which along with the nearby Sleeping Beauty Rock is collectively referred to as "Sleeping Beauty and Pug." There are many legends regarding Sleeping Beauty and Pug; some say that the loyal Pug guards the Sleeping Beauty, who has fallen into a deep sleep due to a witch's curse, while others believe that Pug and Sleeping Beauty were a loving couple who offended a deity and were cruelly turned to stone, standing guard on Green Island. Another version of the story suggests that Sleeping Beauty and Pug had a big fight and decided to sleep separately, ignoring each other thereafter. A more interesting tale recounts that Sleeping Beauty was originally a Flying Fish Fairy, who, while passing by Green Island, found a stray Pug and transformed into human form to keep the Pug company. However, one day while playing by the sea, the Flying Fish Fairy was accidentally splashed by a wave and reverted to her original form, causing the Pug to bite her. When this reached the ears of the Jade Emperor, the Flying Fish Fairy was punished for breaking heavenly laws and transformed into the present-day Sleeping Beauty, while the Pug, having mistakenly bitten the Fairy, was turned into a Pug to guard her. From then on, the Pug no longer liked to eat fish.
