Hoksi Red Brick Kiln Introduction
The brick industry in Penghu has declined, and currently, all production has ceased or disappeared. There were once four brick factories in Penghu, all located in Huxi Township: two in Hongluo, one in Lintou, and one in Jianshan. The remains of the Hongluo brick kiln can still be found along County Road 202. The Hongluo brick kiln is a downdraft kiln, also known as a step kiln, entirely built with red bricks. It was constructed in a nearly sloped manner to facilitate the movement of workers within the factory. The brick kiln in Hongluo consists of three kilns: two in the south and one in the north. The southern kilns have 17 chamber rooms, while the northern kiln has 15. Each chamber room measures approximately 12 to 15 ping, with a length of over 150 meters, making it unparalleled in scale throughout Taiwan. In its heyday, one downdraft kiln could produce up to 450,000 bricks when fully loaded. However, with the advent of hollow bricks and the mechanization of brick factories in Taiwan, the Hongluo brick factory ultimately faced closure. The factory offers a view of ocher-colored ancient structures, with arches and square windows scattered throughout; the chimney of the brick factory stands tall, presenting a remarkable sight. The brick factory is privately owned, and if visitors encounter the owner during their visit, they should politely greet them. [Suggested visit duration] 15 minutes.
The entire Red Brick Kiln is built with red bricks.
