Huksi Red Brick Kiln Factory Introduction
The brick kiln industry in Penghu has declined and is currently either no longer in operation or has disappeared. There were once four brick factories in Penghu, all located in Huxi Township: two in Hongluo, one in Lintou, and one in Jianshan. The Hongluo Brick Kiln Factory, located beside County Road 202, still has traces that can be followed. The kilns at Hongluo Brick Kiln Factory are a type of climbing kiln, also known as step kilns, constructed entirely of red bricks. They are built at a nearly slanted angle to facilitate the movement of workers. The factory features a total of three climbing kilns: two in the south and one in the north. The southern kiln has 17 kiln chambers, while the northern kiln has 15, with each chamber approximately 12 to 15 ping (about 39.6 to 49.5 square meters), and over 150 meters in length, making it uniquely large in Taiwan. At its peak, a single climbing kiln could produce up to 450,000 bricks when fully loaded. Time has not been kind; with the rise of hollow bricks and the mechanized brick factories in Taiwan sweeping through Penghu, the Hongluo Brick Factory eventually faced closure. From a distance, the Hongluo Brick Factory showcases its ochre ancient charm, adorned with arches and square windows; its chimney stands tall and imposing. The factory is privately owned, so visitors should politely greet the owner if they encounter them during their visit. 【Suggested duration of stay】 15 minutes.
