Luksi Red Brick Kiln Factory Introduction
The brick industry in Penghu has declined, and currently, it has either ceased production or vanished. In the past, there were four brick factories in Penghu, all located in Huxi Township: two in Honglu, one in Lintou, and one in Jianshan. The remains of the Honglu brick kiln can be found along County Road 202. The Honglu brick kiln is a type of climbing kiln, also known as a step kiln, built entirely of red bricks. It was constructed in a nearly slanted manner to facilitate the work of the factory staff. The Honglu brick kiln comprises three climbing kilns: two in the south and one in the north, with 17 kiln chambers in the south and 15 in the north. Each kiln chamber is approximately 12 to 15 ping, and over 150 meters long, making it unmatched in scale throughout Taiwan. At its peak, a single climbing kiln could produce 450,000 bricks. However, with the advent of hollow bricks and mechanized brick factories sweeping through Penghu, the Honglu brick factory eventually faced closure. The Honglu brick factory, with its ocher ancient charm, features arches and square windows scattered throughout; the chimney of the brick factory stands tall, creating a unique presence. As the brick factory is privately owned, visitors should greet the owners politely if encountered. [Recommended duration of stay] 15 minutes.
