Zhongyang Old Street Introduction
Central Old Street is the earliest developed street in Penghu, known as the "First Street." In 1984, it was officially designated as a "Historic Preservation Specific Zone." By 1994, residents of Penghu Old Street formed the "Penghu First Street Revitalization Association," with government funding for restoration and renovation, transforming the old street into its current Minnan-style architectural layout. This revitalization aligned with the tourism boom in Penghu, allowing the old street to regain its former glory. The street also features many foreign-style buildings, including a Baroque-style traditional Chinese medicine shop and an old Japanese inn, which were famous establishments in the past. While wandering through Central Old Street, visitors will pass by "M乳巷" (Mo Ru Lane), an alley connecting Central Street. Due to the narrow spacing of houses in early Penghu, people had to turn sideways to pass each other in the alley. Therefore, the women in those times would walk with their hands covering their chests, giving rise to the name "Mo Ru Lane." After reconstruction, the alley has now become quite spacious. Central Old Street is most famous for the Four-Eyed Well, the oldest well on the street, which has a history of over 400 years. Originally a large well, it was later covered with granite slabs to prevent residents from falling in while drawing water, creating four small stone ring holes. Its unique shape is why it is called the Four-Eyed Well. 【Recommended visiting time】 1.5 hours
