Zhongyang Old Street Introduction
Central Old Street is the earliest developed street in Penghu, thus it is known as "First Street." In 1984, Central Old Street was officially designated as a "Historic Preservation Specific Area." By 1994, the residents of the old street formed the "Penghu First Street Revitalization Association," which received government funding for restoration and renovation. The old street was transformed into its current Min-style architectural style, capitalizing on the tourism boom in Penghu and allowing the old street to regain its former glory. The alleys also feature many exotic buildings, including a Baroque-style traditional Chinese medicine shop and an old Japanese inn, which were famous shops in the past. Tourists walking through Central Old Street will encounter "Breast-touching Lane," an alley that connects to Central Street. Due to the narrow spacing between houses in early Penghu, people had to turn sideways to pass each other in the alley, so women would walk with their hands protecting their chests, thus the name Breast-touching Lane. After reconstruction, the alley has now become quite spacious. Central Old Street is most famous for the Four-eye Well, which is also the oldest ancient well in the old street, with a history of over four hundred years. Originally a giant well, it was later covered with granite slabs to prevent residents from falling while fetching water, creating four small stone ring holes. Its unique shape is the reason it is called the Four-eye Well. 【Recommended Stay Time】 1.5 hours
