Zhongyang Old Street Introduction
Central Old Street is the earliest developed street in Penghu, thus earning the nickname "First Street." In 1984, Central Old Street was officially designated as a "Historic Preservation Specific Area." By 1994, the residents of Penghu Old Street established the "Penghu First Street Revitalization Association," with government funding for restoration and renovation, transforming the old street into its current Minnan architectural style. Riding on the wave of Penghu's tourism boom, the old street has regained its former glory. The street also features many foreign architectural styles, including a Baroque-style traditional Chinese medicine shop and an old Japanese inn, both of which were famous establishments in the past. As tourists stroll through Central Old Street, they will pass by "M乳巷" (Mo Ru Lane), an alley connecting to Central Street. Due to the narrow spacing between traditional Penghu homes, people had to turn sideways to pass each other in this alley. Women walking through would shield their chests with their hands, hence the name Mo Ru Lane. Now, after reconstruction, the alley has become quite spacious. Central Old Street is most famous for the "Four-Eyed Well," which is also the oldest ancient well on the street, with a history of over 400 years. Originally a massive well, it was later covered with granite slabs to prevent residents from falling in while fetching water, creating four small stone openings, hence the unique name "Four-Eyed Well."
