Zhongyang Old Street Introduction
Central Old Street is the earliest street developed in Penghu, thus it is known as "the First Street." It was officially designated as a "Historic Preservation Specific Area" in 1984. By 1994, residents of the old street formed the "Penghu First Street Revitalization Association," which, with government funding, restored and renovated the area into its current Minnan-style architectural appearance. Riding the wave of tourism in Penghu, the old street has regained its former glory. There are also many exotic buildings in the alleyways, including a Baroque-style traditional Chinese medicine shop and an old Japanese inn, both of which were famous establishments in the past. As tourists stroll through Central Old Street, they will pass by "Moluxiang," an alley that connects to Central Street. Due to the narrow spacing between houses in old Penghu, people had to turn sideways to walk when encountering others in the alley. Women would walk through this alley with their hands on their chests, hence the name Moluxiang, which translates to "Breast Touching Alley." After reconstruction, the alley has become quite spacious. Central Old Street is most famous for the "Siyanjing," the oldest well on the street, which has a history of over four hundred years. Originally a large well, it was covered with granite slabs to prevent residents from falling in while drawing water, dividing it into four small stone holes. Its unique shape is why it is called Siyanjing, or "Four-Eyed Well." [Recommended stay time] 1.5 hours
