Central Old Street Introduction
Central Old Street is the earliest developed street in Penghu, thus it is known as the "First Street." In 1984, Central Old Street was officially designated as a "Conservation Special Zone for Historical Sites." By 1994, residents of Penghu Old Street formed the "Penghu First Street Revitalization Association," with government funding for restoration and reconstruction, transforming the old street into its current Min-style architectural appearance. Riding the wave of Penghu's tourism boom, the old street has regained its former glory. The street is also home to many foreign-style buildings, including a Baroque-style traditional Chinese medicine shop and a Japanese-style old inn, both of which were famous establishments in the past. As tourists stroll through Central Old Street, they will pass by "Touching Breast Lane," an alley connecting to Central Street. Due to the narrow spacing between the houses in early Penghu, people had to turn sideways to walk past each other in this alley, and women would walk with their hands covering their chests, hence the name Touching Breast Lane. After reconstruction, the alley has now become quite spacious. Central Old Street is most famous for the Four-Eyed Well, which is also the oldest ancient well in the area, with a history of over 400 years. Originally a large well, it was later covered with granite slabs to prevent residents from falling in while drawing water, divided into four small circular holes. Due to its unique shape, it is called the Four-Eyed Well. 【Recommended visiting time】 1.5 hours.
