Yancheng Beiji Temple Introduction
Built in 1684, it is dedicated to Xuantian Shangdi and closely related to the early salt field culture of the area. For over 300 years, it has protected local villagers who rely on agriculture and salt-making for their livelihoods, serving as a spiritual belief for the community. In the past, salt makers from Yan Cheng transported the processed salt from "Pan Gang" near the Beji Temple to places like Anping. Although the river port marks have disappeared today, the intricate streets near the temple still provide clues to its history. The grand ritual procession held every 12 years at the Beji Temple roughly follows the same route as the rivers shown in ancient maps, further highlighting its connection to the history of salt production. Tracing the historical context of the old port from the local beliefs also resonates with the saying, "Beigang Mazu, Nangang Shangdi Gong."
