Beiyue Mountain Introduction
Fengxiang Elementary School, established during the Japanese colonial period, has not only educated many students but also left behind many touching stories. However, with urban development, this elementary school located in the mountains drew its curtain in 1983 due to a significant population decline and a dwindling number of students. The abandoned school space became a crime hotspot and a breeding ground for mosquitoes. It wasn't until the Dasha North Moon team took over in 2014 that efforts began to revitalize the idle space, starting with garbage removal, weed clearance, and painting. After ten years of hard work, old classrooms were gradually reopened, continuing the spirit of the rural principal through a new format of school, assuming the responsibilities of a spiritual lighthouse for the Dasha North area. We restored the appearance of the elementary school, furnished it with colorful desks, chairs, and blackboards, and even designed the menu in the style of exams and textbooks, helping everyone rediscover their pure and brave selves from childhood. Returning to our original intention, we opened an Open Museum with an innovative format, using curation concepts to promote local social innovation, artistic residency, sustainable agriculture, venue revitalization, and the development of a cultural living circle. Integrating "artistic aesthetic education," "in-depth agricultural experiences," and "public space transformation" into local life, we have organized over 600 events in ten years, allowing 400 college students to learn about Hengshan in Hsinchu, while attracting over 600,000 visitors to the remote Dasha North and helping sell 10 million jin of agricultural products to promote local development. Most scenic restaurants in Taiwan serve Italian pasta or American steak, lacking local features, which is a great pity. Moreover, along Taiwan's Provincial Highway 3, which passes through the towns of Guanxi, Hengshan, Zhudong, Beipu, and Emei, while each site is beautiful, there is a lack of integration and contextual connections to promote them effectively, thus Dasha North Moon hopes to give it new meaning. We visited rural areas to find local high-quality ingredients and brought everyone on a food journey along the entire Hsinchu Provincial Highway 3 with the Shanyue Slow Food Set, starting with the Oriental Beauty Tea Champagne from Emei, passing through Hengshan's oven-baked bread, Guanxi's grass jelly cold noodle, handmade mochi from Zhudong, and concluding with Hakka Lei Tea in Beipu. Through food curation, we combined the characteristics of the Hakka towns and the sincere flavors of local produce. Connecting the Hsinchu Hakka areas, we allow everyone to enjoy quality meals while getting to know the characteristics of the five towns along Hsinchu's Provincial Highway 3, promoting the economic development of the regional tourism industry. Dasha North Moon was selected as one of the top 60 scenic restaurants in Taiwan by the 2014 edition of Taipei Walker, and has received a two-leaf recommendation from the Green Dining Guide and the Best Friendly Community Award.
