The Wenqiang wall is part of the enclosure of the residence of the giant businessman Yan Dongyi, which established a rice mill (called "Tulongjian") and an oil factory (called "Youche"). The residence was built during the Daoguang period and part of the Wenqiang wall was left after the residence was repaired following the major earthquake in the 31st year of the Guangxu era.
