Sandiaoling Eco-friendly Tunnel Introduction
The journey from Ruifang Station to Shuangxi Station features nine old tunnels, giving rise to the Taiwanese saying "one coin drills nine holes." Among these, four old tunnels have been developed into cycling paths. The ecological-friendly Sandiaoling Tunnel, which has been reopened after 30 years of abandonment on the former Yilan Line railway, measures 3.19 kilometers in length and is the first "reinforced concrete bicycle path" in Taiwan. The designer has created a water pool design that allows the tunnel entrance to transition from dark to light, reflecting the stunning mirrored reflection of Sandiaoling's lush green mountains. There is a chance to encounter a train during the ride. For safety reasons, bicycles must be walked and guided while passing from the Sanguaizi Tunnel to the cliff-hanging bridge, which accommodates two-way traffic. The Sandiaoling Tunnel and Sanguaizi Tunnel cycling paths connect the tourism routes between Shuangxi Mudan and Ruifang Sandiaoling, making it the latest route in the low-carbon tourism initiative of the Youth Mountain-Sea Line. To reduce traffic impact and considering the limited space inside the tunnel, visitors need to apply for entry online in advance (click here to go). Along the way, there are explanatory signs detailing the characteristics of the area, and guided tour services are available on-site; the public can schedule a tour through the reservation website.
