The Kang Hsing Fireball Festival, with a history of over a century, takes place every year at the East Gate of Hengchun after the Zhongyuan Festival. Its origin dates back to when wealthy residents of Hengchun Town would open the city gates during the Zhongyuan Festival. Many people were injured or killed in the rush for relief supplies, so a competition involving "Lonely Shelters" was designed to争取物品 on these shelters.
