The Hengchun Lantern Festival, which has a history of over a hundred years, is held every year after the Ghost Festival at the East Gate of Hengchun. Its origin dates back to when wealthy individuals in Hengchun Town would open the city gates during the Ghost Festival. As many people were injured or lost their lives in the scramble for relief supplies, a competition to erect "lonely sheds" was designed to contend for the items placed on the sheds.
