The Hengchun Lantern Festival, which has a history of over a hundred years, is held annually after the Zhongyuan Festival at the East Gate of Hengchun. It originated from the practice of wealthy residents of Hengchun Town opening the city gates during the Zhongyuan Festival, which led to many casualties while trying to grab relief items. Thus, a competition involving "standing lonely tents" was designed to compete for the items placed on the tents.
