The Hengchun Lantern Festival, which has a history of over a century, is held annually at the Eastern Gate of Hengchun after the Ghost Festival. Its origin dates back to when wealthy residents of Hengchun Town would open the city gates during the festival, leading to casualties as many rushed to grab relief supplies. To address this issue, a competition involving "erecting solitary sheds" was designed to contest for the items placed on these sheds.
