Lukang River Introduction
The Lugang River Drainage is located on the southern side of Lugang Township. During the Qing Dynasty, merchant ships could navigate into this waterway, which served as an early transportation route for trade with China and was adjacent to the old street area, a hub for goods transactions at that time. This has earned Lugang the reputation of "one government, two Lugang, and three Bangka," and it bears witness to the scene of countless sails entering the port. However, as time passed, the current Lugang River Drainage has lost its original function and has become a channel for stormwater and wastewater collection, gathering rainwater and domestic sewage from the urban area. The county government has initiated the "Lugang River Restoration Project," which connects the old street and historic district, integrates with local residents' lives, and increases recreational spaces for both locals and visitors; it aims to restore the river's former glory and revitalize the cultural landscape. The riverside promenade of Lugang River is approximately 1.5 kilometers long and features diverse spaces along the banks such as plazas, green belts, waterside paths, and a water stage. The water stage and sail plaza provide venues for artistic performances, while the two public art installations "Fulu Beast" and "Lugang Sailing" are set up at the ends of the river section—Kaoyuan Plaza and Sail Plaza, respectively. Additionally, there are water dance performances every evening from 6 PM to 9 PM at Kaoyuan Plaza. The transformation of Lugang River provides a cultural and relaxation space for visitors and local residents, enhancing the surrounding environment.
