Lukang River Introduction

The Lugang River Drainage is located on the southern side of Lugang Township. During the Qing Dynasty, merchant ships could access this waterway, which served as an early transportation route for trade with China. It is also adjacent to the old streets, once a hub for commodity transactions. This has earned Lugang the reputation of "one government, two Lugangs, and three Bangka," and it witnessed the bustling scene of ships entering the harbor at that time. However, with the passage of time, the Lugang River Drainage has lost its original function and has become a drainage canal that collects rainwater and wastewater from the urban area. The county government, through the "Lugang River Revival Project," connects the old street and old city area, integrates the lives of local residents, and increases recreational space for both locals and tourists. This project aims to recreate the beauty of the once-celebrated "mother river," restore cultural landscapes, and revive the past glory of the Lugang River. The waterfront corridor of the Lugang River is about 1.5 kilometers long, featuring squares, green belts, accessible walking paths, and a water stage along the shore. The water stage and sailing square provide spaces for cultural and artistic performances. At both ends of the river, the Kaiyuan Square and Sailing Square are home to two public artworks: "Fortune Deer Beast" and "Deer Sailing." Currently, the Kaiyuan Square hosts a water dance performance every night from 6 PM to 9 PM. The transformation of the Lugang River offers both visitors and local residents a cultural and recreational space, making the surrounding environment even more beautiful.
