Zhongxing Cultural and Creative Park Introduction
Transforming from a paper mill to a cultural and creative park, the Zhongxing Paper Mill, established in 1935, originally operated under the name "Taiwan Industry Company" during the Japanese colonial era and later became a state-owned enterprise after the Nationalist government took over. At that time, it was not only the largest paper manufacturing plant in Taiwan but also the leading producer in Southeast Asia. The mill ceased operations in 2001, and the park remained inactive for thirteen years. In 2014, it was taken over by the Yilan County Government, which initiated revitalization strategies through the preservation and activation of industrial heritage, launching cultural and creative applications and talent cultivation. This opened new opportunities for the rebirth and utilization of the old Zhongxing plant. The "Zhongxing Cultural and Creative Park," characterized by its industrial heritage and historical buildings, boasts rich cultural narratives and local stories. The park has developed through various spatial stages, initially focusing on nurturing talent, supporting industries, and co-creating art in the "Cultural and Creative Zone." Through the brand spirit of "Yilan Self-Made," it continuously introduces annual special exhibitions, film and music promotion courses, guided tours of the ruins and factory site clusters, and co-creation activities. Visitors can not only leisurely stroll and experience the unique historical atmosphere of the park but also, through various experiences, gain a deeper understanding of the cultural creativity and artistic innovation that drive local development. Gathering creative energy as a local and international exchange platform, the transformation of the old factory into a cultural and creative park marks a new milestone for Yilan's creative industry. In the future, it plans to develop a self-made experimental space, an aesthetic living education field, and a collaborative platform for arts and enterprises to support young entrepreneurs. By fostering local connections and international perspectives through collaborative projects, the aim is to deepen and leverage the effects of cultural and creative clustering, attract talented individuals back to Yilan, and draw more creative talents to reside in Yilan, gradually consolidating the local creative energy to jointly build a vibrant future for cultural and creative development.
