Yilan Government Memorial Museum Introduction
The Yilan Government Memorial Hall, located in the city of Yilan, was established by Kikujiro Nishiki, the chief of Yilan during the Japanese occupation. Originally serving as the residence for the heads of Yilan County, the hall primarily showcases the historical development of governance in Yilan. After planning and restoration by experts and craftsmen, it was reopened to the public in 1997. Visiting the Yilan Government Memorial Hall feels like stepping into another world, where time seems to stand still in the Japanese colonial period. The old trees sway in the wind, and the site retains traditional Japanese wooden houses, classical Western architecture, and a tranquil, elegant Japanese garden. Upon entering the main exhibition room, the air carries a faint aroma of cypress, due to the use of cypress wood from Taiping Mountain in Yilan during the construction of the residence. This is a historical space worth slowing down to explore. Next to the Yilan Government Memorial Hall is the Yilan Literary Museum. After visiting the memorial hall, you might as well head over to the literary museum to experience the cultural atmosphere and enjoy the rare tranquility found amidst the bustling city.
