Yilan Historical Memorial Hall Introduction
The Yilan City Government Memorial Hall, located in the urban area of Yilan, was built by Kikuchi Jiro, the head of Yilan during the Japanese rule. It originally served as the official residence for successive administrative heads of Yilan County. The hall primarily showcases the historical development of governance in Yilan. After renovation and planning by experts and craftsmen in 1997, it was opened to the public. Visiting the Yilan City Government Memorial Hall feels like stepping into another world, with time seemingly frozen in the era of Japanese rule. Old trees sway gently with the wind, and the site preserves traditional Japanese wooden houses, Western classical architecture, and a tranquil or elegant Japanese garden. As you push open the door to the main exhibition room, the air carries a faint aroma of cypress, which was used for the construction of the residence from the cypress trees of Taiping Mountain in Yilan. This is a space worth slowing down your pace to explore in detail. Next to the Yilan City Government Memorial Hall is the Yilan Literary Museum. After visiting the hall, it’s worthwhile to stop by the literary museum to experience the cultural ambiance and enjoy the rare tranquility found amidst the bustling city.
