Yilan Administrative Memorial Hall Introduction
Located in the city of Yilan, the Yilan District Memorial Hall was established by Kikujiro Nishiyama, the chief of the Yilan Prefecture during the Japanese colonial period. Originally, it served as the official residence for successive administrative heads of Yilan County. The hall mainly showcases the historical development of governance in Yilan. In 1997, following planning and restoration by experts and craftsmen, it was reopened to the public. Visiting the Yilan District Memorial Hall feels like stepping into another world, where time seems to stand still in the Japanese colonial era. Old trees sway gently in the wind, and the site preserves traditional Japanese wooden houses, classical Western buildings, and a tranquil, elegant Japanese garden. As you enter the main exhibition room, a faint aroma of cypress wood fills the air, as the official residence was constructed using cypress from Taiping Mountain in Yilan. This is a historical space where you can take your time to slow down and explore. Adjacent to the Yilan District Memorial Hall is the Yilan Literary Museum. After visiting the memorial hall, you might want to head over to the literary museum to experience the cultural atmosphere and enjoy a rare moment of tranquility amidst the bustling city.
