Sankeng Ecological Park Introduction
Sankeng Natural Ecology Park is located by the scenic Shimen Reservoir along the Dahan River, covering an area of approximately 7 hectares. The park features a large ecological lake and surrounding spacious lawns as its main attractions. Constructed using ecological methods, the entire area is densely planted with local native flora and fauna, blending nature with beautiful landscapes. The park includes recreational facilities such as rest areas, pavilions, wooden arches, and water channels, and connects to the Sankeng Bicycle Trail, creating a space for leisure and exercise. The surrounding environment of Sankeng Ecological Park is free from industrial development, located near the reservoir dam. The landscape of lakes, mountains, and extensive sloped green spaces creates a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere. In autumn, the Taiwanese sour jujube trees change colors to a gentle red, adding beautiful hues to the lush treetops, creating a stunning view. Historically, Sankeng Ecological Park was a busy ferry terminal during the Japanese colonial period. However, with the silting of the riverbed, water transport declined, and the area was further wrecked by illegal sand mining and the random dumping of waste. With the collective efforts of local people and stakeholders, the Ministry of the Interior's Construction and Planning Agency redesigned the area, incorporating water sources from the Shimen Main Canal, gradually improving local vegetation, and transforming it into a shimmering, lush natural ecological park. Sankeng Ecological Park showcases rich riverside ecology and is one of the representatives of the beautiful Longtan Mountain. From its planning stage, the park aimed to maintain its original ecology, minimizing human interference. Combining nature and recreation, except for the pavilions and scenic bridges made of concrete, the entire area allows rainwater to seep naturally into the soil. The ecological pond's surroundings are constructed with natural pebbles, continuously supplied with underground and mountain spring water to keep the pond clear. The protective embankments are strengthened with treated wooden piles, providing resting spots for birds. Fishing is prohibited in the pond, enriching the lake's ecosystem, and the picturesque scene becomes even more enchanting at sunset. Walking along the wooden plank path by the lake provides an up-close view of the lake and mountains, as well as opportunities to observe bird ecology, making it a great place for tourists to relax or for wedding photography and ecological observation. Additionally, the park is adjacent to the Dahan River embankment, where visitors can climb the stone steps to enjoy the views of the Shimen Dam and the banks of the Dahan River. At the back of the park connects to the famous Sankeng Bike Path, a 6-kilometer bicycle trail suitable for riders of all ages. During the summer, the view of vast green rice fields is captivating. After the autumn and winter rice harvest, planting Persian chrysanthemum seeds as green manure results in a sea of blooming flowers, creating a delightful floral spectacle.
