Xinshe Rice Terraces Introduction
The renowned "Sea Terraces" refer to the XinShe Terraces. Regardless of the season or time of year, whether during the rice planting, harvesting, or fallow periods, one can always feel the myriad of charm of the Sea Terraces! The pre-harvest view is what most people cherish the most, with the rice grains plump under the sunlight, swaying with the sea breeze. Walking along the ridges and gazing towards the distant Coastal Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean, it's as if one becomes one with the picturesque scene, reluctant to leave. The Kavalan people migrated south from Yilan to build a new settlement in Fongbin Township, which is why the village is named XinShe. In the Kavalan language, XinShe means "a place where all things thrive." The residents, accustomed to farming in Yilan, still fondly remember the taste of rice, and thus they established terraces and planted rice on the coastal plateau, forming the unique sight of rice fields connected to the sea, also known as sea rice terraces. The annual harvest of the XinShe Sea Terraces is the largest of its kind in Taiwan; the terraces back up against the Coastal Mountain Range and are adjacent to the coast. From a distance, they appear serrated as they reach towards the sea. At one end of the rice fields, a wooden boardwalk is built, allowing visitors to stroll along and enjoy the scenery.
