Tianpu Ecological Park Introduction
In the past, the forestry industry preserved wood by soaking logs in pools to release tree sap and extend the lifespan of the wood. Currently, there is a hidden gem known as the "Tianpu Timber Storage Ecological Wetland" in the city of Hualien, which has become a restful forest retreat for Hualien residents. The Tianpu Ecological Pool is now the largest wetland in Hualien City and serves as a perfect breeding ground for numerous waterfowl. It is home to over 50 species of trees and shrubs, along with blooming lotus flowers and various aquatic plants. This rich ecological environment attracts birds such as the Purple Swamphen, Little Egret, Japanese White-eye, Kingfisher, and the White-bellied Crake, making it a hidden forest sanctuary in the urban landscape. The approximately 2-hectare Tianpu Ecological Pool was formerly the "Timber Storage Pool" managed by the Papaya Forest District Administration. After being out of use for many years, the Hualien Forest District Office transformed the Timber Storage Pool into a wetland ecological park in 2005, in response to the changes in forestry management. In collaboration with Hualien Agricultural and Industrial Vocational High School, they engaged in sustainable long-term ecological maintenance and management. Walking trails made of "Phoebe wood shavings" and "Camphor wood shavings" were completed, rich in plant essential oils, which not only emit a pleasant fragrance but also have mosquito-repelling properties, making visitors feel as if they are in a forest. Currently, the Tianpu Ecological Pool features interpretive signs about plants, wetland ecology, and birds. The original measuring room has been transformed into an exhibition space introducing the local timber harvesting history. Some of the old equipment used during logging operations has been preserved along the edge of the ecological pool, maintaining the remnants of forestry development while offering education on both ecological environments and historical culture.
