Hsieh Family Ancestral House Introduction
The Xue Family Ancestral Hall, located in Lubei Li, Zuoying District, is one of the few well-preserved traditional Min Nan Sanhe courtyard red brick buildings in Kaohsiung City. Constructed in 1820 by ancestors of the Xue family, the first section was built using traditional materials such as lime, clay, and earthen bricks. Ninety years later, in 1910, due to the family's prosperity, the structure expanded to its third section using red bricks and limestone from Banping Mountain, encompassing an area of 1,400 ping. The architectural structure of the Xue Family Ancestral Hall is rigorous, and although it lacks the pavilions of prominent families, the wooden carvings, dougong brackets, and flower windows exhibit the charming elegance of traditional residential architecture. Walking through this ancient residence feels like stepping back in time, with the traces of ancestors' efforts during the agrarian and sugar milling era in Zuoying two hundred years ago evident in every corner. This site has significant cultural and historical meaning, reflecting the depth of Taiwan's architectural history. Due to its precious heritage value, the Xue Family Ancestral Hall was selected as one of Kaohsiung City’s top ten historical buildings and is designated as a city historic site.
