Chiayi: Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation Chiayi Distillery Introduction
【Evaluation Validity Period: 2024/08/07~2027/08/06】This plant originated from the Taisho Brewery Co., Ltd. Chiayi Plant, managed by Japanese businessman Akashi Shota in Taiwan, which was established in 1916 (Taisho 5, Republic of China 5). In July 1922 (Republic of China 11), the Japanese implemented a liquor monopoly in Taiwan, merging over a thousand private distilleries and establishing distilleries in Taipei, Shulin, Taichung, Puli, Chiayi, Tainan, Pingtung, Hualien Port, Taitung, and Yilan. The distillery in Chiayi was initially under the jurisdiction of the Taiwan Governor-General's Office Monopoly Bureau's Tainan Branch, which changed to the Chiayi Branch when it was established in 1924 (Republic of China 13). From 1943 (Republic of China 32) to 1945 (Republic of China 34) during World War II, most of the buildings and equipment were damaged by American bombing. After Taiwan's recovery in October 1945 (Republic of China 34), it was taken over by the Taiwan Provincial Monopoly Bureau and actively repaired. In June 1967 (Republic of China 56), due to the improved quality of sorghum liquor and a surge in sales, expansion for increased production was approved, planning to raise the monthly production of sorghum liquor from 400 shō to 6,000 shō, with construction starting in October of the same year. The expansion was completed in September 1970 (Republic of China 59). To accommodate the expansion plan, the plant relocated to the Minxiong Industrial Zone in Chiayi County, divided into two parts. The Shaoxing wine factory was started on September 14, 1983 (Republic of China 72) and completed production on January 4, 1988 (Republic of China 77). The sorghum liquor factory relocation began in July 1990 (Republic of China 79) and was completed with the “Chiayi Distillery Relocation Completion Ceremony” held on November 15, 1998 (Republic of China 87). In 2002 (Republic of China 91), in line with the liberalization of tobacco and liquor production for private operators, the Monopoly Bureau was restructured into Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation. ♦Excessive drinking is harmful to health♦♦Do not drink and drive; do not drive after drinking♦♦Prohibited for individuals under 18 years old to drink♦
