Chiayi Columnar Basalt & Chiayi Rock Waterfall 九孔池 Introduction
The Chihsi Columnar Basalt is located in the middle section of the western coastline of Xiyu Township, featuring a deep black color that gradually turns brown as you head north. In addition to its color, the columnar basalt here displays a remarkable diversity in form, with various appearances including upright, curved, fallen, and even tilted formations. The majestic columnar basalt was formed when high-temperature lava from volcanic eruptions cooled and contracted upon contact with water and air, resulting in column-like fissures on the surface. In the past, fish ponds were situated above the Chihsi Columnar Basalt, and during rain or when the fish ponds were drained, water cascaded down the rocks, resembling a waterfall, thus earning the name Chihsi Rock Waterfall. However, some say the name originates from the curved fissure structures of the rocks, which resemble torrents of galloping horses rushing into the sea. Recently, the Jiukong Pool located below the Chihsi Rock Waterfall has also become a popular photo spot. Like many attractions in Penghu, it is not always accessible for viewing. During high tide, only the basalt columns are visible, and only when the tide recedes can the Jiukong Pool reveal its full form. At this time, visitors can walk onto the stone platform to admire the sea view and the complete appearance of the columnar basalt, though caution is advised due to the slippery surface!
