Wang Boat Culture Museum Introduction
The Wang Ship Cultural Museum in Pingtung County is Taiwan's first local cultural museum dedicated to the Wang Deity procession culture. Constructed in 2022 and set to open in 2024, the museum features five main exhibition themes: "Ocean Beliefs," "Thousand-Year Procession," "Pingtung Procession," "Crafting Divine Vessels," and "Donggang Wang Deity Reception." It houses a Wang ship handcrafted by local master artisans and provides an immersive experience to explore the historical context and skill transmission of Wang ships. The main building is designed in the shape of a ship as an oceanic motif, connecting to the local characteristics of Donggang, incorporating natural ventilation and shading systems to reduce energy consumption, making it a sustainable building that breathes. 1F Ocean Beliefs: Why send the Wang Deity? An immersive theater called "The River of Life" unravels the historical origins of the peaceful Wang Deity reception and Wang ships. Visitors can gaze upon a grand, intricately painted Wang ship, comparable in size to a small tuna fishing boat, showcasing the craftsmanship of local shipbuilders. The Donggang Wang ship beautifully reflects a unique aesthetic distinct from other regions’ beliefs. 2F Thousand-Year Procession: The Wang ship culture has a long history in Taiwan. Through five major national intangible cultural heritage items—Nankunshen Sea Drift Wang Ship, Mamingshan Five-Year Thousand-Year Ceremony, Xigang Burning Fortune, Tainan Thirteen Ships, Nanguan Line's Three Temples, and Donggang Wang Deity Peace Ceremony—visitors can understand the evolution of Wang ships in Taiwan and their cultural ties to overseas traditions. Additionally, the interactive map "Wang Xun Kun Island" allows exploration of the network of Wang Deity belief cultures across Taiwan. 3F Pingtung Procession - Crafting Divine Vessels: The Donggang and Pingtung north and south Wang Deity receptions differ significantly! Due to varying local customs, each area has developed its unique Wang Deity celebration; the museum displays Wang ships that showcase exquisite craftsmanship and vibrant traditional artistry. Unlike the Wang ships at Donggang's Donglong Temple, the decorative art on this ship features marine life native to Donggang's fishing trade, such as black tuna and bonito, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty of the Donggang Wang ship up close. The walls display the current templates left by the shipbuilders, who use these to craft a Wang ship. This wooden fishing boat-making technique has been preserved due to the Donggang Wang Deity celebrations, with new ships being made every three years. 4F Donggang Wang Deity Reception: The Donggang Wang Deity Peace Ceremony, held every three years, strictly follows ancient rituals that have been maintained. Local residents mobilize almost the entire town to welcome the arrival of the Thousand-Year Deity. The "Seven-Cornered Head" palanquin procession is uniquely characterized by its tradition of passing from father to son, a hereditary practice that holds significant importance in Taiwan's Wang Deity belief and ceremonial culture.
