Heart Carving House Introduction
Located in the Xiping area of Yuanli, the Heart Carving House is a stone house close to the sea and was the creative space of the late artist Chen Jiong-huei. He was a recipient of the Ministry of Culture's Transmission Award and established the "Mountain Gate Carving Society" in 1973. With sharp tools and heavy mallets, he wove raw wood into vivid life, where every stroke of Chen Jiong-huei revealed the charm of traditional Indigenous art. The stone sculptures at the entrance of the Heart Carving House express a rugged wilderness; the large stones constructed into a wall shaped like two hundred-step snakes demonstrate the essence of primitive art. The stone pillars on the right side of the main gate, the original pavilion on the left, and the garden featuring walls piled with original wooden mortars further enhance the ancient allure of the Heart Carving House. Inside, it serves as an exhibition space for the works of Chen Jiong-huei and his students. His works are deeply influenced by the cultures of the Paiwan and Rukai tribes, primarily featuring themes of humans, snakes, deer, and pigs. His unique carving techniques and forms emphasize artistic qualities over functional purposes, making it a worthwhile exploration for everyone.
