Heart Sculpture Residence Introduction
Located in the Xinpingli area of Yuanli, the Heart Carving Residence is a stone house near the seaside and was the place where the late artist Chen Jiong-hui created his works. He was awarded the Ministry of Culture's Heritage Award and, in 1973, established the "Mountain Gate Carving Society." With sharp chisels and heavy wooden mallets, he brought out the primitive life of wood, and every stroke of Chen Jiong-hui's hand revealed the charm of traditional Indigenous art. The stone sculptures at the entrance of the Heart Carving Residence express rustic wildness, with large stones forming two walls resembling hundred-step snakes, showcasing the essence of primitive art. The stone pillars on the right side of the entrance, the primitive pavilion on the left, along with walls piled high with original wooden mortars, add a touch of antiquity to the garden landscape; the interior serves as an exhibition space for works by Chen Jiong-hui and his students. His works are deeply influenced by the cultures of the Paiwan and Rukai tribes, primarily focusing on themes of humans, snakes, deer, and pigs. His carving techniques and forms are unique, stripping away practical purposes to enhance the qualities of art, making it worthwhile for everyone to explore.
