Donghua Camphor Factory Introduction
The Tongluo area in Miaoli is abundantly planted with camphor trees. In the past, there were over a hundred camphor oil factories, and today, Donghua Camphor Oil Factory is the only remaining camphor oil distillation factory in Taiwan. Established in 1937, it has been in operation for over seventy years, currently managed by the third-generation owner. The factory still preserves a valuable license made of cypress wood issued by the Governor-General of Taiwan during that time, which is considered a treasure of the factory. As soon as you arrive at the entrance, you can smell the strong aroma of camphor. The store offers a wide variety of products; initially, Donghua only produced camphor oil and lemongrass oil, but since the third-generation owner took over, the focus has shifted to developing new products. The owner even pursued further studies in cosmetics research at Providence University and creatively developed around 200 different products, ranging from handmade soaps, shampoos, to body washes, offering an overwhelming array of items in the small shop. In recent years, the old camphor factory has incorporated new ideas, providing guided tours explaining the camphor production process and allowing children to make soap through DIY activities, creating wonderful intellectual memories for all visitors.
