Donghua Camphor Factory Introduction
In Miaoli's Tongluo area, there are numerous camphor trees, and in the past, there were over a hundred camphor factories. Today, Donghua Camphor Factory is the only remaining camphor distillation factory in Taiwan. Established in 1937, it has been operating for more than seventy years, now managed by the third-generation owner. The factory still preserves the camphor license issued by the Governor-General's Office of Taiwan made from cypress wood, which can be considered a treasure of the factory. As soon as you arrive at the entrance, you can smell the strong camphor fragrance. The shop offers a wide variety of products; originally, Donghua only produced camphor oil and lemongrass oil and other essential oil products. After the third-generation owner took over, they focused on developing new products, even taking courses at Providence University’s cosmetics research program to unleash creativity and develop 200 different products, including handmade soap, shampoo, body wash, and more. The small shop is filled with so many products that it can be overwhelming. In recent years, the old camphor factory has incorporated new ideas, providing guided tours on camphor production for tourists and allowing children to try DIY soap making, ensuring that everyone can leave with beautiful and meaningful memories.
