Yong'an Drum Craft Workshop Introduction
In street temple fairs and Mazu pilgrimages, the sounds of gongs and drums can always be heard. The Yong'an Drum Craft Workshop in Xianxi Township, Changhua County, has preserved the traditional craft of handmade drum making, which has now been passed down to the third-generation owner, Huang Cheng-feng. With the advancement of technology, many traditional crafts have gradually been replaced by machinery, leading to a decrease in the number of "master craftsmen" that are passed down through oral tradition. In the early days, before the advent of machinery, craftsmen honed their skills through repeated learning and exploration, creating the value of handcrafting and crafting each product with the warmth of their hands. This historically rich drum factory still maintains the most traditional craftsmanship, where each step from drying cowhide, soaking, peeling, to shaping requires going through many meticulous processes, making it an indispensable part of traditional craftsmanship.
