Yung-An Drum Art Workshop Introduction
During street temple fairs and Mazu pilgrimages, one can always hear the sounds of gongs and drums associated with these religious events. The Yong'an Drum Crafts Workshop in Xianxi Township, Changhua County, preserves the traditional craft of handmade drum making, which has now passed down to the third-generation owner, Huang Cheng-feng. With the advancement of technology, many traditional skills have gradually been replaced by machinery, leading to a decline in the number of "master craftsmen" that we pass down in words. In the early days, when there were no machines, craftsmen relied on repeated learning and exploration to hone the value of handmade products, creating each piece with the warmth of their hands. This time-honored drum factory still retains the most traditional techniques, and every step—from sun-drying cowhide, soaking it in water, peeling, to shaping—requires numerous intricate processes, making it an indispensable part of traditional craftsmanship.
