Yong'an Drum Craft Workshop Introduction
In street temple fairs and Mazu pilgrimage events, the sounds of gongs and drums can be heard in association with religious occasions. The Yong'an Drum Craft Workshop in Xianxi Township, Changhua County, has preserved the traditional craft of handmade drum making, which has now been passed down to the third generation owner, Huang Cheng-feng. With advancements in technology, many traditional crafts are gradually being replaced by machines, leading to a decline in the number of "master craftsmen" that are passed down through generations. In the early days, when there were no machines, the craftsmen developed the value of handmade items through continuous learning and exploration, using the warmth of their hands to create each product. This historic drum factory still retains the most traditional craftsmanship today, with numerous meticulous steps involved in processes such as drying cowhide, soaking, peeling, and shaping, making it an indispensable part of traditional craftsmanship.
