Yong'an Drum Craft Workshop Introduction
During street temple fairs and Mazu's pilgrimage, the sounds of gongs and drums can be heard at any religious event. The Yong'an Drum Craft Workshop in Xianxi Township, Changhua County, has preserved the traditional craftsmanship of handmade drums, which has now been passed down to the third-generation owner, Huang Cheng-Feng. With the advancement of technology, many traditional crafts are gradually replaced by machinery, leading to a diminishing number of artisans we refer to as "master craftsmen." In the early days, before machines existed, artisans honed their skills through repeated learning and exploration, creating value in handmade products with the warmth of their hands. This long-established drum factory still retains the most traditional techniques today, involving numerous intricate steps such as sun-drying cowhide, soaking, peeling, shaping, and more, making it an indispensable part of traditional craftsmanship.
