Shi Zhenyang was born in 1946 in Lukang. His father, Shi Kunyü (1919-), is a traditional wooden construction master, originally from Quanzhou, Fujian. Shi Zhenyang's introduction to wood carving came from his father; during his childhood, he often accompanied his father to various temple work sites, gradually developing an interest in woodworking. At around 18 years old (1963), he officially began working in woodcraft, initially taking on projects still contracted by his father, with designs often created by Shi Kunyü and the actual work carried out by Shi Zhenyang. It wasn't until he was 34 years old (1979) that he began taking on projects independently.
