Nanzijiao Mansa Academy Ruins Introduction
The ruins of the Manse School, located in the Wangmei Village of Xinyi Township, were built in the 13th year of the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty (1887 AD) by Chen Shih-lieh, a commissioner of the Yunlin Land Development Bureau. It is currently designated as a county historic site. During the Guangxu period, the court ordered the opening of mountains and the cultivation of indigenous peoples, establishing schools to educate indigenous children. In the 13th year of Guangxu, a school was set up here for the indigenous children of Alishan, as the road connecting Alishan to Taitung was completed. However, due to inadequate education, students eventually stopped attending the school, leading to its gradual abandonment. The Wanxingguan Monument, located outside the Manse School, was discovered by the stationed Japanese police in the 15th year of the Taisho era (1926 AD), and it is a valuable historical site documenting the policies for the cultivation of indigenous peoples during the Qing Dynasty.
