Nanzijiao Mansa Academy Ruins Introduction

The Nanzijiao Mansa School Ruins, located in the Wangmei Village of Xinyi Township, was built in the 13th year of the Guangxu era (1887) during the Qing Dynasty. It was constructed under the commission of Chen Shilie, a member of the Yunlin Land Development Bureau, and is currently designated as a county-level historic site. During the Guangxu period, the government issued orders to open up mountains and pacify indigenous people, establishing indigenous schools to educate the native children. In the 13th year of Guangxu, the Mansa School was established here to serve the indigenous children of Alishan, connecting the Alishan area to Taitung. However, due to inadequate education, students gradually stopped attending the school, leading to its eventual abandonment. The Wanxingguan Monument was erected outside the Mansa School and was discovered by stationed Japanese police in the 15th year of the Taisho era (1926), serving as a precious historical site documenting the policy of pacification during the Qing Dynasty.
