Nanzijiao Manshe School Ruins Introduction
The Manjia School Ruins, located in the Wangmei Village of Xinyi Township, was built in the 13th year of the Guangxu era (1887) during the Qing Dynasty, when Chen Shilie was a commissioner of the Yunlin Land Development Bureau. It is currently designated as a county-level historic site. During the Guangxu period, the imperial court ordered the opening of mountains and the pacification of indigenous peoples, establishing schools to educate indigenous children. In the 13th year of Guangxu, the area connecting the Alishan region to Taitung was established, and the Manjia School was set up for indigenous children from Alishan to attend. However, due to inadequate education, students gradually stopped attending the school, leading to its eventual abandonment. The Wanxingguang Monument was established outside the Manjia School and was discovered by Japanese police stationed there in the 15th year of the Taisho era (1926). It is a valuable historical relic regarding the policies of mountain-opening and indigenous pacification during the Qing Dynasty.
