Nanzijiao Mansen Academy Ruins Introduction
The Manzaijiao School Ruins, located in the Wangmei Village of Xinyi Township, were built in the 13th year of the Guangxu era (1887) during the Qing Dynasty, when Chen Shilie served as a commissioner of the Yunlin Settlement Bureau. It is currently designated as a county historical site. During the Guangxu period, the court issued orders to open up mountains and educate indigenous people, establishing schools to teach indigenous children. In the 13th year of Guangxu, roads were built through the Alishan area to Taitung, and the Manzaijiao School was set up here for the indigenous children to attend. However, due to inadequate education, students stopped attending the school and it gradually fell into disrepair. The Wanxingguan Stele was established outside the Manzaijiao School and was discovered by stationed Japanese police in the 15th year of the Taisho era (1926). It is a valuable historical artifact related to the policies of the Qing Dynasty's development and education of indigenous people.
