Nanzijiao Manshe School Ruins Introduction

The ruins of the Nanzijiao Mansa School located in Wangmei Village, Xinyi Township, were built in the 13th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1897). It was constructed while Chen Shilie served as a commissioner of the Yulin Development Bureau and is currently designated as a county historic site. During the Guangxu period, the government ordered the opening of mountains and the civilizing of indigenous peoples, establishing schools for indigenous children. In the 13th year of Guangxu, a school was set up here for the indigenous children of Alishan as the road across Alishan to Taitung was completed. However, due to inadequate education, students ceased attending the school, and the Mansa School gradually fell into disrepair. The Wanjingguan Monument is located outside the Mansa School and was discovered by Japanese soldiers stationed there in the 15th year of the Taisho era (1926), serving as a precious historical site documenting the policies regarding the opening of mountains and the governance of indigenous peoples during the Qing Dynasty.
