Tree Spirit Tower Introduction
The Tree Spirit Tower is located in the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area. It is a stone tower approximately 20 meters tall, built in 1935 by the Japanese government to commemorate the 77 workers (including technicians from Taiwan and Japan) who lost their lives in logging operations, as well as to soothe the souls of the 100,000 trees that were cut down. The design of the Tree Spirit Tower is rich in symbolic meaning: the base is circular, representing the growth rings of trees, each level symbolizes 500 years of tree age, and the grooves on both sides of the tower represent saw marks, reflecting the history of logging. This memorial not only showcases humanity's reverence for nature but also testifies to Alishan's past forestry culture. Today, it is surrounded by later-planted cedar forests, with lush greenery all around, creating a tranquil environment that is an important site for visitors to experience the natural beauty and historical memories of Alishan.
