Tree Spirit Tower Introduction
The Shuling Tower is located in Alishan National Scenic Area and is a stone tower approximately 20 meters high, built in 1935 by the Japanese government. It was established to honor the 77 workers (including Taiwanese and Japanese technicians) who died due to logging operations, as well as to console the souls of the 100,000 trees that were cut down. The design of the Shuling Tower is rich in symbolic meaning, with a circular base representing the growth rings of trees, each layer symbolizing 500 years of tree age, while the grooves on both sides of the tower represent saw marks, narrating the history of logging. This memorial tower not only demonstrates people's reverence for nature but also witnesses Alishan's past forestry culture. Today, the surrounding area is filled with later-planted cedar forests, lush greenery, and a serene environment, making it an important spot for visitors to appreciate the natural beauty and historical memories of Alishan.
