Tree Spirit Tower Introduction
The Tree Spirit Tower is located in the Alishan National Scenic Area and stands approximately 20 meters tall. It was built in 1935 by the Japanese government to honor the spirits of 77 workers (including Taiwanese and Japanese technicians) who lost their lives during logging operations, as well as to soothe the souls of the 100,000 trees that were cut down. The design of the Tree Spirit Tower is rich in symbolic meaning; its base is circular, representing the growth rings of trees, with each layer symbolizing 500 years of tree age. The grooves on both sides of the tower represent saw marks, recounting the history of logging. This memorial tower not only demonstrates people's reverence for nature but also bears witness to the historical forestry culture of Alishan. Today, the area is surrounded by later-planted cedar forests, with lush greenery and a serene environment, making it an important site for visitors to experience the natural beauty and historical memory of Alishan.
