Tree Spirit Tower Introduction
The Tree Spirit Tower is located in Alishan National Forest Recreation Area. It is a stone tower approximately 20 meters high, built in 1935 by the Japanese government to honor the spirits of 77 workers (including Taiwanese and Japanese technicians) who perished during logging operations, as well as to console the souls of the 100,000 trees that were felled. The design of the Tree Spirit Tower is rich in symbolic meaning; the base is circular, representing the growth rings of trees, with each layer symbolizing 500 years of tree age, while the grooves on both sides of the tower represent saw marks, recounting the history of logging. This memorial tower not only reflects people's reverence for nature but also witnesses the forestry culture of Alishan in the past. Today, the area is surrounded by later-planted cedar forests, providing a lush green environment that is serene and tranquil, making it an important site for visitors to experience the natural beauty and historical memories of Alishan.
