Litao Village Introduction
Litau Village is the highest-altitude community in Hualien County's Hai-tuan Township and is one of the larger Bunun villages along the eastern section of the Southern Cross-Island Highway. It is located at the 175.5 km mark on Provincial Highway 20, with an altitude exceeding 1,000 meters, making it a significant rest stop along the Southern Cross-Island Highway tourism route. The name derives from the Bunun language word "Litu," which means wild loquats. Most residents are of the Bunun ethnicity, and the entire village is situated on a flat river terrace surrounded by mountains, making it an ideal location for living and farming. The surrounding mountains create a picturesque landscape, offering a tranquil atmosphere akin to a paradise. The high-altitude climate provides cool and clean air, making it a great place to escape the summer heat. Due to being a crucial stop along the eastern section of the Southern Cross-Island Highway, many long-distance travelers take a break here, allowing visitors to wash away their travel fatigue in the village's peaceful and leisurely atmosphere. The village also has shops selling mountain products and local specialties, such as cabbage, high-altitude aiyu jelly, and fresh shiitake mushrooms, which are quite popular and make it an excellent spot for a rest stop along the way.
