The establishment of the Marine Resources Museum can be traced back to 1987 when the National Cultural and Educational Foundation commissioned Dr. Chang Kun-hsiung from Academia Sinica to plan the museum, highlighting the focus on promoting the regional marine resources and cultural characteristics. In 1994, with the assistance of Dr. Cheng Ming-hsiu, the first phase of the project was completed. Subsequently, the second and third phases were carried out starting in 1995, and the museum officially opened in April 1997. The exhibits focus on Penghu's marine culture, including the evolution of organisms, intertidal fishing practices, nearshore fisheries, realistic fishing village life, ecological conservation, and sustainable resource utilization. The museum aims to lead the public to explore and discover the diverse marine culture, marine ecological landscapes, marine biodiversity, environmental changes, and sustainable utilization of Penghu marine resources, laying a foundation for marine cultural education and inspiring the public to engage in new lifestyles that contribute to marine conservation.
