Penghu Marine Resources Museum Introduction
The Penghu Marine Resources Museum, affiliated with the Penghu County Cultural Affairs Bureau, is divided into two halls: Hall A and Hall B. Hall A displays the cultural history of the marine environment in Penghu, the evolutionary history of marine life, coral resources in Penghu, rock and mineral resources of Penghu, the geological features of the Penghu Archipelago, intertidal zone exhibits, and films for viewing. Hall B features traditional fishing gear, marine ranching, real-life scenes of fishing village life, the evolution of fishing boats, the future of the underwater world, types of fisheries in Penghu, economically significant aquatic species in Penghu, the distribution and fishing methods of economically significant aquatic species in the waters of Penghu, and underwater landscapes. The establishment of the Marine Resources Museum dates back to 1987 when it was commissioned by the National Cultural Association of the Executive Yuan and planned by Dr. Chang Kun-Hsiung of the Academia Sinica, highlighting the museum's aim to promote regional marine resources and cultural characteristics. In 1994, with the assistance of Dr. Cheng Ming-Hsiu, the first phase of the project was completed. Subsequently, the second and third phases were carried out starting in 1995, and the museum officially opened in April 1997. The exhibits focus on Penghu's marine culture, including the evolution of life, intertidal fishing, nearshore fisheries, real-life scenes of fishing village life, ecological conservation, and sustainable resource utilization. It aims to lead the public to explore and discover the diverse marine culture of Penghu, the marine ecological landscape, biodiversity, environmental changes, and the sustainable use of Penghu's marine resources, laying a foundation for marine cultural education and inspiring the public to engage in marine conservation as a new way of life.
