The predecessor of Penghu Confucius Temple is Wenshi Academy, which is the earliest cultural dissemination center in Penghu. It is located in the eastern suburbs of Magong City and was founded by Hu Jianwei, the 18th magistrate of Penghu, in the 31st year of the Qianlong reign. Due to Penghu's abundant production of Wenshi stone, symbolizing the academy's nurturing of talents as colorful as the textures of the stone, it was named "Wenshi Academy."

Due to the abundance of Wenshih (literally "literary stones") in Penghu, which symbolizes the academy's nurturing of talents as colorful as the patterns of the stones, it was named "Wenshih Academy."
