The predecessor of Penghu Confucius Temple was Wenstone Academy, which was the earliest cultural dissemination site in Penghu. It is located in the eastern suburbs of Magong City and was established by Hu Jianwei, the 18th magistrate of Penghu, in the 31st year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. Since Penghu is rich in Wenstone, symbolizing the academy's ability to cultivate talents as colorful as the patterns of the stone, it was named "Wenstone Academy."
