In 1923, to commemorate the visit of Crown Prince Hirohito of Japan's Taisho era, funds were raised to establish the "Hsinchu Street Library." After its completion in 1925, it was renamed the "Hsinchu Prefectural Library." It has since been used as a library and is now privately owned by Shin Kong Life Insurance, with no public access available.
