In 1923, to commemorate the visit of Crown Prince Hirohito of Japan during the Taisho era, fundraising was conducted to establish the "Hsinchu Street Library." It was completed in 1925 and renamed the "Hsinchu Prefectural Library." It has since been used as a library, but is now private property of Shin Kong Life Insurance and is not open for public visits.
