Hsinchu Tobacco Monopoly Bureau Introduction

The Hsinchu Tobacco and Alcohol Monopoly Bureau building, built in 1934, was known during the Japanese colonial period as the "Taiwan Governor-General’s Office Monopoly Bureau Hsinchu Branch." Its predecessor was the "Taipei Monopoly Branch Hsinchu Sub-office," established in 1892. In 1924, it was renamed the "Taiwan Governor-General’s Office Monopoly Area Hsinchu Sub-office." After the construction of the new office building, it was upgraded to a branch in 1936, becoming the direct management center for tobacco and alcohol in the Hsinchu area. After World War II, it was renamed the "Taiwan Tobacco and Alcohol Monopoly Bureau Hsinchu Branch" in 1947.
