Wulai Atayal Museum Introduction
Wulai was historically the living settlement of the Atayal people, who are the true inhabitants of Wulai. The establishment of the Atayal Indigenous Museum in Wulai, the only mountainous area in New Taipei City, is particularly significant. The carefully curated exhibitions showcase the lifestyle and cultural philosophy of the Atayal people, including their food, clothing, and housing. The museum introduces the history and living conditions of the Atayal people. The first floor displays artifacts related to the origins, migration, and hunting of the Atayal tribe, as well as the natural ecology of the Wulai area; the second floor features an introduction to traditional facial tattooing, which is a crucial ritual in Atayal culture—only men and women with hunting and weaving skills are eligible for facial tattoos and marriage. The third floor showcases the daily utensils and traditional crafts of the Atayal people. On weekends, visitors can enjoy local Atayal dance performances and participate in DIY courses such as glass bead stringing, Atayal weaving, and bracelet making.
