Wulai Atayal Museum Introduction
Wulai was once the living settlement of the Atayal people, who are the true inhabitants of Wulai. It is significant that the Atayal Indigenous Museum was established in Wulai, the only mountainous area in New Taipei City. The carefully curated exhibitions showcase the lives and cultural philosophies of the Atayal people, including their food, clothing, and housing. The museum introduces the history and lifestyle of the Atayal people. The first floor displays artifacts related to the origins, migrations, and hunting of the Atayal people, as well as the natural ecology of the Wulai area. The second floor features an introduction to traditional facial tattooing, which is an extremely important ritual in Atayal culture. Only men and women who possess hunting and weaving skills are eligible for facial tattooing and marriage. The third floor showcases the daily utensils and traditional crafts of the Atayal people. On holidays, visitors can enjoy performances of song and dance by local Atayal people and participate in DIY courses such as glass bead stringing, Atayal weaving, and bracelet making.
