Wulai Scenic Tram Introduction
Located in the Wulai District of New Taipei City, the Wulai Scenic Train initially served to transport timber. Due to the growing tourist demand for the Wulai Waterfall, passenger service officially began in 1963, with manual operation pushing tourists along. To accommodate the increasing number of visitors, the system was motorized in 1974, using a diesel engine to power the train. In 1987, a tunnel was created at the waterfall station to replace the original turntable, and this setup has remained in use ever since. After the timber industry declined, the train was repurposed for transporting tourists, officially becoming a charming sightseeing train in 1963. Although the train's design is not very luxurious, it shouldn't be underestimated; it is actually quite quick, covering approximately 1.6 kilometers from the departure station to the waterfall station in no time, with open windows allowing passengers to enjoy the lush greenery along the way. Next to the train tracks is the Lover's Trail, built along the Nanshi River Valley. It is recommended to take the train uphill and walk down the Lover's Trail back to the Viewing Bridge. The Lover's Trail, with a mountain wall on one side and a stream on the other, allows visitors to enjoy fresh air and negative ions through this light exercise, making it a very relaxing experience.
