Wulai Scenic Train Introduction
Located in the Wulai District of New Taipei City, the Wulai Trolley was initially used for transporting timber. Due to the growing tourist demand after the development of the Wulai Waterfall, passenger service officially began in 1963, with hand-pushed trolleys transporting visitors. To accommodate the increasing number of tourists, motorization was introduced in 1974, using diesel engines to propel the trolleys. In 1987, a tunnel was excavated at the waterfall station to replace the original turntable, which is still in use today. After the logging industry faded away, the trolley was repurposed for transporting tourists. It was only in 1963 that it transformed into a charming tourist trolley. Although the design of the trolley is not very luxurious, don’t underestimate it; it is actually quite fast, covering about 1.6 kilometers from the departure station to the waterfall station. Passengers can enjoy the lush forest scenery through the open hatches along the route. Next to the trolley tracks is the Lovers' Trail, which is built along the Nanshi River Gorge. It is recommended to take the trolley uphill and walk down the Lovers' Trail back to the Viewing Bridge. This trail, with mountains on one side and a stream on the other, offers a light exercise opportunity for visitors to breathe fresh air and enjoy the negative ions, making for a very relaxing experience.
