Daitankeng Ruins Introduction
The Shulin area was once rich in coal mining, leaving behind numerous abandoned mine sites with a history of over a century. The Kaidankeng coal mine, which once boasted the highest output among all the mines in the nearby Shanzijiao area, caught the attention of the Japanese during their rule over Taiwan due to its abundant mineral resources. This led to the construction of the current Shanjia Station, designated as a coal transportation hub, which operated until the mine was closed in 1959. After a century of inactivity, the Kaidankeng mine has been revitalized through the efforts of passionate locals. At its peak, the Kaidankeng coal mine employed over a thousand workers.
