Gaidankeng Site Introduction
The Shulin area once thrived on coal mining in its early days, leaving behind many abandoned mine sites. The Kaidankeng coal mine, with over a century of history, had the highest output among all the mines in the Shan Zigang area at that time. After the Japanese took control of Taiwan, they recognized the rich mineral resources and built the current Shanjia Station as a dedicated station for coal transportation, which remained in operation until the mine was closed in 1959. After its closure, the century-old Kaidankeng mine has been restored and opened to the public thanks to the efforts of local enthusiasts. At its peak, the Kaidankeng coal mine employed over a thousand workers, making it the most productive mine in the Shan Zigang area.
