Stilt House Introduction
Shihding East Street, also known as "Suspended Foot House," is part of the old Shihding Street and is currently one of the few remaining "No Sky Street" in Taiwan. Upon careful observation of the houses here, you will notice that they all rely on columns to support their structure, allowing them to be suspended above the riverbed, which is a very unique architectural feature. In the past, in mountainous areas, people sometimes had to suspend part of their buildings to construct homes in ideal locations. As a result, houses along the creek side of Shihding East Street are supported by columns, a style that has been preserved since the Japanese colonial period, making it a distinct architectural style. This special construction form of the suspended foot houses was developed by residents to solve the issue of limited land space. However, don't assume that such a structural design is unreliable; the suspended foot houses have stood for decades, proving their stability over time!
