Stilt House Introduction
Shiding East Street, also known as "Diaojiaolou" or Shiding Old Street, is currently one of the few remaining "no-sky streets" in Taiwan. If you observe the houses here closely, you'll notice that they all rely on the strength of columns, allowing the buildings to be suspended above the riverbed, which is a very unique architectural style. In the past, in mountainous areas, people sometimes had to build part of their homes suspended to achieve ideal locations. Therefore, the houses on the river-side of Shiding East Street are supported by columns, a feature that has been preserved since the Japanese colonial period, making it a distinctive architectural characteristic. This unique Diaojiaolou architectural form was developed by residents to solve the problem of limited space. However, don’t think that such a structure is unreliable; these Diaojiaolou buildings have stood here for decades, and time has proven that they are indeed quite sturdy!
