Shihding Century-old Stone House Introduction
Shide East Street in New Taipei City is a rare "skyless street" in Taiwan. The houses along the Wutuku Creek were built above a suspended riverbed. Most of these houses are constructed from local river stones. Shide West Street is the area where it all began, but currently, the population of East Street surpasses that of West Street, gradually replacing the former bustling West Street. It features unique stilt constructions in the skyless street and century-old stone houses. The century-old stone house is built from stones, representing a rare local architectural treasure that reflects a century of history. The stone house refers to the two connected shops in East Street, a traditional Chinese medicine store and a grocery store. Inside, the staircase walls are carved from stone, and the hall contains various ancient objects such as Chinese medicine cabinets, stone mortars, and hand scales left by ancestors. Climbing up the stone stairs, you can see a back garden with stone tables and chairs covered in moss, and faint traces of Buddha statues visible on the stone walls, allowing you to experience what life was like for those who lived there in the past.
