Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden Introduction
Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden, named after its origin in Wufeng, Taichung, was influential in the 19th century as the Lin family controlled a large amount of farmland in Taiwan and helped quell several wars, possessing thousands of troops and obtaining privileges such as the monopoly on camphor. It is one of the five prominent families in Taiwan. The national historic site Wufeng Lin Family refers to the mansion and garden architecture located in Wufeng, consisting of three main parts: the lower house system, the upper house system, and the Lai Garden. The Wufeng Lin Family Gongbao Di area includes the open visiting spaces "Gongbao Di" and "Dahua Hall," both exemplifying traditional Taiwanese architecture with significant cultural and artistic value. The "Gongbao Di," Taiwan's representative of Min-style official residences, was constructed from 1858 to 1895, featuring eleven sections and five deep entrances, making it the largest of its kind in Taiwan. The wall paintings featuring characters like Li Hongzhang are intricately colorful, and the detailed woodwork showcases local materials and traditional auspicious patterns such as bats and dragons, enhancing its grandeur. The "Dahua Hall," the only surviving Fuzhou-style theater building in Taiwan, was built from 1890 to around 1894, ranging five sections wide, with distinctive designs for the main hall and windows, serving as a venue for gatherings and theatrical performances, symbolizing the peak of the Wufeng Lin family's lower house. The Dahua Hall has been a venue for various social events focusing on political, ethnic, and women's issues, influencing Taiwan's democratic society significantly, and it continues to host performance art activities periodically, sharing this historically significant space with the public. Visiting this area allows one to understand Taiwan's history over the past century through the experiences of the Lin family, appreciate the beauty of traditional Chinese architecture, experience the traditional "tea serving" etiquette, making it an educational yet enjoyable historic site suitable for family visits.
