Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden Introduction
Wufeng Lin Family, named after Wufeng in Taichung, rose to prominence in the 19th century when the Lin family controlled vast farmlands in Taiwan and helped quell multiple conflicts, possessing thousands of troops and obtaining privileges such as the exclusive rights to camphor. It is one of the five prominent families in Taiwan. The National Historic Site of Wufeng Lin Family refers to the gardens and residential buildings of the Lin Family located in Wufeng, encompassing three main architectural clusters: the Lower House system, the Upper House system, and the Lai Garden. The Wufeng Lin Family Gongbao Hall area includes public viewing spaces such as the "Gongbao Hall" and the "Dahuating," both exemplary of traditional Taiwanese architecture, and possess significant cultural and artistic value. The representative Fuzhou-style official residence in Taiwan, "Gongbao Hall," was built between 1858 and 1895, featuring eleven front openings and five deep sections, making it the largest of its kind in Taiwan. The wall features calligraphy by Li Hongzhang, with intricate and rich decor, where each plaque tells a story, capturing the eye. The exquisite woodwork, showcasing various designs, elegance, and locality, features traditional auspicious patterns like bats and dragons, enhancing its splendor. The only remaining Fuzhou-style theater structure in Taiwan, "Dahuating," was built between 1890 and around 1894, spanning five openings, with distinct designs for the main hall and windows. Serving as a venue for banquets and family gatherings to watch performances, it symbolizes the zenith of the Lower House of Wufeng Lin Family. In the Dahuating space, numerous past social issue seminars related to politics, ethnicity, and women's matters have been held, such as petitions to the Taiwanese Parliament and the New Cultural Movement, which have profoundly impacted Taiwan's democratic society. Currently, it also hosts periodic performance art events, sharing this historically significant space with the public. A visit to the park allows one to explore the history of Taiwan over the past century through the lens of the Wufeng Lin Family, appreciate the beauty of traditional Chinese architecture among affluent families, and experience the traditional custom of "serving tea," making it an educational and entertaining historical site suitable for family visits.
