Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden Introduction
Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden, named after its origin in Wufeng, Taichung, is a significant historical site. In the 19th century, the Lin Family controlled a large amount of farmland in Taiwan and assisted in quelling numerous conflicts, possessing thousands of troops and acquiring privileges such as the monopoly on camphor, making them one of Taiwan's five major families. The national historic site Wufeng Lin Family refers to the garden and mansion complex located in Wufeng, which includes the Lower House (Xiaocuo), Upper House (Dingcuo), and the Laoyuan. The Gongbao Hall in the Wufeng Lin Family complex is open for public viewing, consisting of the "Gongbao Hall" and "Dahua Hall," both exemplifying traditional Taiwanese architecture and holding significant cultural and artistic value. The representative of Fujian-style official residences in Taiwan, "Gongbao Hall" was built from 1858 to 1895, covering a vast area of eleven openings and five depths, making it the largest of its kind in Taiwan. The walls feature calligraphy by Li Hongzhang, with intricate and rich decorations telling stories through its plaques. The detailed woodwork, elegant and unique, reflects local characteristics, while the latticework is engraved with traditional auspicious patterns like bats and dragons, enhancing its grandeur. The "Dahua Hall," the only remaining Fuzhou-style theater building in Taiwan, was constructed from 1890 to around 1894, spanning five openings and featuring a distinct design with a main hall and window designs. It serves purposes such as hosting banquets and family gatherings for watching performances, symbolizing the flourishing era of the Lin Family's Lower House. The Dahua Hall has historically hosted numerous lectures on political, ethnic, and women's social issues, such as the Taiwan Assembly Petition and the New Culture Movement, profoundly influencing Taiwanese democratic society. It now periodically hosts performing arts events, allowing the public to share in this historically significant space. Visitors to the complex can learn about Taiwan's history over the past century through the journey of the Lin Family and appreciate the beauty of traditional Chinese architecture from affluent households, experiencing the traditional "tea serving" etiquette. It is an educational and entertaining site suitable for family visits.
