Wufeng Lin Family Yongbao Garden Area Introduction
Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden is named after its origin in Wufeng, Taichung. In the 19th century, the Lin family controlled a large amount of farmland in Taiwan and helped pacify several conflicts while possessing thousands of troops, obtaining monopolies such as camphor, making them one of the five prominent families in Taiwan. The National Historic Site Wufeng Lin Family encompasses the garden and mansion buildings located in Wufeng, including the Lower House system, Upper House system, and the Lai Garden as the three main architectural clusters. The Gongbao Hall area of the Wufeng Lin family, which is open for visits, includes the "Gongbao Hall" and "Dahua Hall," both exemplars of traditional Taiwanese architecture, holding significant cultural and artistic value. The representative of Taiwanese Minnan-style official residences, "Gongbao Hall," was constructed from 1858 to 1895, featuring eleven bays and five courtyards, making it the largest of its kind in Taiwan. The wall features calligraphy by Li Hongzhang, and the overall painting is rich and detailed with each plaque telling a story, visually striking. The intricate woodwork is elegant and varied, using locally-sourced materials; the window decorations are engraved with auspicious traditional motifs such as bats and dragons, enhancing its grandeur. The only remaining Fuzhou-style theater building in Taiwan, "Dahua Hall," was built between 1890 and around 1894, with a width of five bays and a distinct design featuring a bright hall and ventilated windows, serving purposes for banquets and family gatherings for performances. It symbolizes the prosperity of the Lin family's Lower House. The Dahua Hall has hosted many events related to political, ethnic, and women's social issues, such as the Taiwanese Assembly petition and the New Culture Movement, which have profoundly influenced Taiwan's democratic society. It also periodically hosts performing arts activities, sharing this historically significant space with the public. A visit to the park allows one to understand Taiwan's history over the past century through the experiences of the Wufeng Lin family, appreciate the beauty of traditional Chinese architecture of affluent families, and experience the traditional "tea serving" etiquette, making it an educational and enjoyable historic site suitable for family visits.
