Wufeng Lin Family Mansion and Garden Introduction
Wufeng Lin Family, named after Wufeng in Taichung, was prominent in the 19th century. The Lin family controlled a large amount of farmland in Taiwan and assisted in quelling numerous conflicts, possessing thousands of troops and receiving privileges such as the monopoly on camphor, making them one of the five major families in Taiwan. The national historic site Wufeng Lin Family refers to the gardens and residential buildings of the Lin family located in Wufeng, encompassing the Lower House System, Upper House System, and the three main architectural complexes of Lai Garden. The open areas of Wufeng Lin Family's Gongbao Hall include "Gongbao Hall" and "Dahua Hall", both exemplifying traditional Taiwanese architecture and possessing significant cultural and artistic value. Gongbao Hall, representing the Fujian-style official residence in Taiwan, was constructed from 1858 and completed in 1895. It features eleven openings and five depths, making it the largest of its kind in Taiwan. The calligraphy by Li Hongzhang on the walls, along with its intricate and rich overall painting and story-telling plaques, are eye-catching. The detailed woodwork showcases elegant diversity, utilizing locally sourced materials, with decorative window carvings featuring traditional auspicious patterns like bats and dragon-like creatures, adding to its grandeur. Dahua Hall, the only remaining Fujian-style theater building in Taiwan, was built from 1890 and completed around 1894. It has a width of five openings and is characterized by its distinctive design of bright halls and cave windows. It served as an important venue for family gatherings, receptions, and watching performances, symbolizing the prosperity of the Wufeng Lin Family's Lower House. This space has hosted numerous events related to political, ethnic, and women's social issues, such as Taiwan's parliamentary petition and the New Culture Movement, profoundly influencing Taiwan's democratic society. Today, it also hosts performance art activities periodically, sharing this historically significant space with the public. A visit to the park allows one to understand Taiwan's history over the past hundred years through the history of the Wufeng Lin Family, appreciate the beauty of traditional Chinese architecture of a prominent family, and experience the past tradition of "serving tea", making it an educational and recreational heritage park suitable for family visits.
