Guangfu New Village Introduction
Located in Wufeng District, Guangfu New Village is the first new town in early Taiwan, rich in military dependent village flavor, making it an excellent place for wedding photography and film shoots. In the past, Guangfu New Village served as quarters for employees of the Provincial Government's Education Department, Health Department, and printing factories. Funded by American aid and inspired by the “garden city” design concept observed by then Deputy Director Liu Yongmao during a study tour in the UK, it aimed to integrate work and living areas while designing a low population density and a high ratio of green space. At its peak, the village housed over four hundred households, boasting well-maintained public facilities including schools, parks, and markets, with a clean environment and orderly streets. Notably, it features Taiwan's first separate rainwater and sewage drainage system, marking its significance in Taiwan's urban architectural history. Three years after the 921 Earthquake, residents recognized the value of repurposing the idle quarters for public use, aspiring to transform Guangfu New Village into a community life museum enriched by cultural creativity from artists, breaking free from its "provincial government quarters" fate and becoming complementary to the Earthquake Museum. However, the reformed Guangfu New Village fell under the management of various central government departments, such as the Ministry of Finance, the Department of Health, and the Ministry of Education, complicating its management and reuse. Additionally, residents faced legal restrictions preventing changes to their living environments, leading to deteriorating living conditions. Today, Guangfu New Village has undergone community revitalization, infused with new life, becoming a hub of cultural and creative arts through a collective of 70 idealistic shop owners, transforming it into a thriving arts village. Visitors can find a variety of installation art and creative stores along the streets and alleys, allowing Guangfu New Village to once again lead everyone in exploring the footprints of time.
