Henderson Park Introduction
In the early days, Dadu Mountain lacked water sources, and residents had to transport water from the mountain foot using bullock carts or carry it on their shoulders, or rely on water ponds to gather rainwater, making life very inconvenient. In 1960, Dr. James Hunter, an American professor teaching in the Department of Sociology at Tunghai University, was aware of the difficulty residents faced in obtaining drinking water. He advocated for the establishment of the "Dadu Mountain Tianli Community Improvement Committee," pledging to assist residents in installing a water supply system. At that time, the estimated total cost was around 2.4 million NTD. In addition to seeking financial subsidies from the Farmers' Association, the Taiwan Provincial Government, and Taichung County Government, Dr. Hunter donated his life savings of 600,000 NTD to help the residents of Dadu Mountain install simple tap water facilities. The water supply project was completed in April 1963. At that time, the only areas in Taichung with tap water supply were Taichung City and Fengyuan, while the nearby Tunghai Villa area did not have tap water supply until 1983.
