Yanshui Catholic Church Introduction
In addition to the Beehive Firecracker Festival and the Lantern Festival, Yanshui has a hidden gem, the "Church of the Holy Spirit," which combines both Western and Chinese architectural styles. With its traditional temple architecture featuring tiled roofs, slanted roofs, and red pillars, stepping inside reveals an interior that can significantly impact first-time visitors. The spacious area, altar, and wooden benches on both sides are similar to other churches, but the numerous red columns adorned with calligraphic couplets in various fonts, as well as the commonly seen "cabbage leaf" capitals and wooden carvings of birds typical in Taiwanese temples, create a unique atmosphere. The walls are filled with colorful paintings, which, upon closer inspection, appear to present Biblical stories through the "vocabulary" of traditional temple murals, depicting figures, food, and plants familiar to the Taiwanese temple art style. This cultural fusion in architectural style has its background. In 1955, the first priest from Germany, Father Hugo Kuhl, arrived in Yanshui to begin his evangelistic work. In order to connect with this town where Taiwanese is spoken and temple worship is common, he made efforts to learn and speak Taiwanese. Later, Father Li Shaofeng renovated the church with localized elements to bridge the gap with the community. In an age where Catholicism is well-known among Taiwanese people, such architecture has invaluable historical significance.
