Tzeng Wen-Chung Art Museum Introduction

Meilun is a place rich in culture and talent, where the beautiful landscapes and warm-hearted people have nurtured literary figures like Chung Li-ho, who passionately dedicated his life to literature and advocated for farmers' rights, as well as artists like Teacher Tseng Wen-chung, who selflessly contributed to aesthetic education and devoted himself to preserving the local beauty. Teacher Tseng Wen-chung is a renowned oil and watercolor painter who grew up in the Tseng family's courtyard on Yong'an Old Street. He has a deep affection for Meilun's local customs, beautiful scenery, and architecture, creating hundreds of works in his series on his hometown and Kaohsiung, capturing the idyllic landscapes reminiscent of a Peach Blossom Spring. He generously donated large paintings to government cultural units and schools to promote aesthetic education among students. Tseng Wen-chung has a unique fondness for traditional Hakka courtyards. Concerned about the gradual disappearance of beautifully designed courtyards due to neglect, he tirelessly advocated for their preservation and revitalization. In 2000, he finally rebuilt his ancestral home on Yong'an Street into a spacious modern gallery, establishing the Tseng Wen-chung Art Museum, which showcases his and other artists' works and serves as a venue for art and literature lectures. He also encourages the residents of Yong'an Street to preserve, document, and display Hakka cultural artifacts and history, leading to the establishment of a group of courtyard art museums that ensure the enduring heritage of Hakka culture.
