Shoushan Zoo Introduction
Kaohsiung City Shoushan Zoo is the largest public zoo in southern Taiwan, managed by the Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau, and is one of the three municipal zoos in Taiwan, second only to Taipei Zoo in scale. In 2022, the zoo improved the habitats and outdoor activity spaces for animals and set up animal-friendly aerial observation walkways, allowing Kaohsiung residents and visitors to observe the daily lives of cute animals from different angles with minimal disturbance. It is an excellent place for family leisure, outdoor teaching, and ecological education. In the Shoushan Zoo, the boundaries are softened with landscaping, and aerial walkways weave through the animal habitats. The netted fences that rise on both sides allow visitors to be hidden within and observe animal interactions from a height. Entering the two elevated mountain houses on the sky bridge and the four animal observation corridors hanging under the bridge, visitors can see close to the animals' natural habitat through large floor-to-ceiling windows. They can watch capybaras enjoying a soak, lions lazily basking in the sun, or Formosan black bears scratching against tree trunks, experiencing the adorable and authentic aspects of various animals, as if stepping into their home and experiencing their living spaces in multiple ways. The renovated Shoushan Zoo has become a harmonious place that blends with nature. The park's pathways and roads have been improved, and a park train is available to guide visitors around the area. Fun videos and explanation boards along the route provide insights into the animals' habits for both young and old. The water plaza has transformed into a fun fountain with mist-like chimneys, allowing children to play in the refreshing pool. Furthermore, old animal enclosures have been renovated, part of the roofs opened to let in sunlight and rainwater, improving ventilation, cleanliness, and drainage for a comfortable living environment for the animals. New star attraction - Capybara: Shoushan Zoo has introduced capybaras and mixed them with various herbivores such as llamas and mini donkeys. Visitors can admire the animals' behaviors from above or walk down to the exhibition hall for a direct eye-level view to closely observe how they eat, sleep, and play in the water in their cozy homes. Don't miss the "star animals": The animal stars of Shoushan Zoo are treasures of Kaohsiung. Among them are the Formosan black bear—Poppy, the orangutan couple—A-Hung and Mi-Mi, the handsome white tiger—Chao-Hai, and the veteran African elephant—Ali. You can also see the adorable meerkat family, whose every move melts the hearts of visitors.
