228 Peace Park, Kaohsiung City Introduction
The 228 Peace Memorial originally stood in Shoushan Park. Due to the small base and lack of detailed inscriptions, after more related information emerged in recent years, the families of the February 28 incident have repeatedly suggested that the government erect a new monument to soothe the wounds and remind the world. In 2006, a new modern, landscape-style memorial was finally established in 228 Peace Park, located by the Love River on Zhongzheng 4th Road. The monument is designed with ergonomic angles and heights, explicitly detailing the events and featuring a commemorative wall of 168 identified victims' names, framed by lush low trees guiding people into the memorial activity square. The overall atmosphere is elegant and solemn, deeply imbued with cultural and historical significance. Previously known as Ren'ai Park, 228 Peace Park was once a stadium and the site of Kaohsiung's busiest underground shopping mall. After a major fire in 1989, it was renovated into its current form. The park is dotted with trees and lawns, offering a lush green environment that is the perfect place for citizens' leisure activities. This peace park, bearing historical memories, is located beside the Love River and close to the site of the February 28 incident. The flowing river water cleanses the dust of history, reminding the world to forgive but not ignore historical tragedies. Future generations must respect the value of life and peace to foster harmony among Taiwan's ethnic groups and advance democracy and freedom.
