228 Peace Memorial Park, Kaohsiung City Introduction
The 228 Peace Memorial was originally located in Shoushan Park. Due to its small base and insufficient details in its inscription, the families of the February 28 Incident have repeatedly suggested that the government establish a new monument to heal emotional wounds and warn future generations. In 2006, a new monument was finally established in 228 Peace Park, located on the west bank of the Love River along Zhongzheng 4th Road, designed in a modern landscape style. The monument is ergonomically designed, detailing the events of the incident, while a memorial wall listing the names of 168 verified victims is framed by low green shrubs, guiding visitors into the memorial activity square. The overall design is elegant and solemn, deeply rich in cultural and historical significance. Previously known as Ren'ai Park, 228 Peace Park was once a stadium and the site of Kaohsiung's most bustling underground shopping mall. After a major fire in 1989, it was renovated into its current form. The park is filled with trees and lawns, bursting with greenery, making it an excellent place for leisure activities for the citizens. This peace park, carrying historical memories, is located beside the Love River and close to the site of the February 28 Incident. The gentle river water washes away the dust of history, reminding people to choose forgiveness for historical tragedies while not ignoring them. Posterity must respect the preciousness of life and peace to promote harmony among Taiwan's diverse ethnic groups and further advance democracy and freedom.
