228 Peace Memorial Park, Kaohsiung City Introduction
The 228 Peace Memorial was originally located in Shoushan Park. Due to the small size of the site and the lack of detailed inscriptions, family members of the victims of the February 28 Incident have frequently suggested to the government that a new monument be erected to heal the emotional wounds and raise awareness among the public. In 2006, a new memorial was finally established in 228 Peace Memorial Park on the west bank of the Love River along Zhongzheng Fourth Road. The monument is designed with ergonomic angles and heights, detailing the events of the incident. A memorial wall featuring the names of 168 identifiable victims is framed by verdant shrubs, guiding visitors into the memorial activity square. The overall atmosphere is elegant and solemn, rich in cultural and historical significance. 228 Peace Memorial Park was formerly known as Ren'ai Park and was once a sports arena as well as the old site of the most bustling underground shopping mall in Kaohsiung. After a major fire in 1989, it was renovated into its current form. The park is filled with trees and lawns, brimming with greenery, making it an ideal place for residents to engage in leisure activities. This peace park, bearing historical memories, is located by the Love River and near the site of the February 28 Incident. The flowing river waters cleanse the dust of history, reminding the public to choose forgiveness while not ignoring the tragedies of the past. Future generations must respect the preciousness of life and peace to ensure greater harmony and progress for Taiwan's ethnic groups and democracy.
