228 Peace Memorial Park, Kaohsiung City Introduction
The 228 Peace Memorial was originally located at Shoushan Park. Due to the small size of the site and the lack of detailed inscriptions, the families of the February 28 Incident have repeatedly suggested the government establish a new stone monument to heal emotional wounds and warn the world. In 2006, a new monument was finally built within the 228 Peace Park, located on the west bank of Love River along Zhongzheng 4th Road. This modern landscape-style monument is designed at ergonomic angles and heights, specifically detailing the events of the incident. A memorial wall listing the names of 168 identifiable victims is framed by lush, low trees, guiding visitors into the memorial activity plaza. The overall ambiance is elegant and solemn, with deep cultural and historical significance. The 228 Peace Park was previously known as Ren'ai Park, which used to be a sports stadium and the site of Kaohsiung's busiest underground shopping mall. After a major fire in 1989, it was renovated to its current appearance. The park is filled with trees and lawns, brimming with greenery, making it the best place for citizens' leisure activities. This peace park, carrying the weight of historical memories, is located next to the Love River and near the site of the 228 Incident. The flowing river washes away the dust of history, reminding the world to choose forgiveness for historical tragedies without ignoring them. Future generations must respect the value of life and peace to ensure the harmony of Taiwan's ethnic groups and the advancement of democracy and freedom.
