228 Peace Park, Kaohsiung City Introduction
The 228 Peace Memorial was originally located in Shoushan Park. Due to the small size of the site and the lack of detailed inscriptions, after relevant information emerged in recent years, the families of the victims of the February 28 Incident repeatedly suggested that the government erect a new stone monument to soothe their emotional wounds and alert the world. In 2006, a new memorial was finally established in 228 Peace Park, located on the west bank of the Love River along Zhongzheng 4th Road, designed in a modern landscape style. The monument is constructed at angles and heights suitable for ergonomic use, providing a detailed account of the events. A commemorative wall listing the names of 168 identified victims is framed by lush low trees, guiding people into the memorial square. The entire setting is elegant and solemn, rich in cultural and historical significance. Previously known as Ren'ai Park, 228 Peace Park was once a stadium and also the site of Kaohsiung's busiest underground shopping mall. After a major fire in 1989, it was renovated into its current appearance. The park features numerous trees and lawns, creating a lush green environment, making it an ideal spot for leisure activities for the citizens. This peace park, carrying historical memories, is located beside the Love River and near the site of the February 28 Incident. The gentle river water washes away the dust of history, reminding the public to forgive historical tragedies without ignoring them. Future generations must respect the preciousness of life and peace to ensure the harmonious coexistence of Taiwan's diverse ethnic groups and the continuous progress of democracy and freedom.
