Jianying Park Introduction
Between Dagongli and Shanxingli in Fenglin Township, Hualien County, lies the Hualien River. Since ancient times, there was only a bamboo bridge for crossing during the dry season. In the summer of 1977, a typhoon struck, destroying the bamboo bridge. At that time, four teachers, including the academic director Chen Guoyi, Zhang Jian, Deng Yuying, and Lin Baoxuan, at Shanxing Elementary School planned to cross the river hand-in-hand to get to school, despite the rapid river flow. Unfortunately, two of the teachers, Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying, fell into the water and drowned. This news shook the entire country, and people were deeply moved by the dedication of teachers in remote areas. After learning of this event, then-Executive Yuan Premier Chiang Ching-kuo decided to allocate funds to build a cement bridge to improve transportation for Shanxingli, naming it "Jianying Bridge" in memory of the two teachers who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Later, this story was made into the film "Jianying Bridge," further popularizing the great spirit of sacrifice and dedication of the two teachers, which also increased the recognition of the Fenglin area. To commemorate Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying, the Fenglin Township Office established Jianying Park on a small hill next to the east side of Jianying Bridge, adjacent to the famous scenic County Road 193 in Hualien. In addition to erecting bronze statues of the two teachers for people to remember and pay tribute to, the park also provides a great place for leisure and recreation in the Fenglin area.
