Jianying Park Introduction
Between Darong Village and Shanxing Village in Fenglin Township, there is the Hualien River. Historically, during the dry season, there was only a bamboo bridge for passage. In the summer of 1977, the bamboo bridge was destroyed by floodwaters due to a typhoon. At that time, the academic director Chen Guoyi and three teachers, Zhang Jian, Deng Yuying, and Lin Baoxuan, serving at Shanxing Elementary School, decided to cross the river hand in hand despite the swift currents to reach the school. Unfortunately, they fell into the water, and two teachers, Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying, drowned in the line of duty. This news shocked the nation, and everyone deeply admired the dedication of teachers in remote areas. Upon learning about the incident, then Premier Chiang Ching-kuo decided to allocate funds to build a concrete bridge to improve transportation for Shanxing Village and named the bridge "Jianying Bridge" in memory of teachers Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying, who sacrificed their lives for their students. Later, this story was made into a film titled "Jianying Bridge," further spreading the great spirit of the two teachers and raising the profile of the Fenglin area. In memory of teachers Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying, the Fenglin Township Office built Jianying Park on a small hill next to the east side of Jianying Bridge, adjacent to the famous scenic Highway 193 in Hualien. The park features memorial bronze statues of the two teachers for people to pay their respects, while also adding a recreational area for leisure in the Fenglin region.
