Jianying Park Introduction
Between Dalong Village and Shanxing Village in Fenglin Township lies the Hualien River, where historically, during the dry season, there was only a bamboo bridge for people to cross. In the summer of 1977, the bamboo bridge was destroyed by floodwaters due to a typhoon. At that time, the academic director Chen Guoyi, along with three teachers Zhang Jian, Deng Yuying, and Lin Baoxuan, were determined to reach Shanxing Elementary School even though the river was raging. They held hands to cross the river but unfortunately fell into the water. Tragically, teachers Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying drowned while trying to save themselves. This news shocked the entire nation, and many were deeply moved by the dedication of teachers in remote areas. Upon learning of this incident, then-Executive Yuan President Chiang Ching-kuo decided to allocate funds to build a concrete bridge to improve the transportation links for Shanxing Village, naming it the "Jianying Bridge" in memory of the two teachers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Later, this story was adapted into a film titled "Jianying Bridge," which made the heroic sacrifice and dedication of the two teachers widely known, thereby increasing the recognition of the Fenglin area. To honor teachers Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying, the Fenglin Township Office constructed Jianying Park on a small hill next to the east side of Jianying Bridge, adjacent to the famous scenic route County Road 193 in Hualien. The park features bronze statues of the two teachers for remembrance and serves as a recreational area for the Fenglin community.
