Jianying Park Introduction
Between Dayong Village and Shanxing Village in Fenglin Township, Hualien County, there is a river called Hualien River. Since ancient times, during the dry season, there was only a bamboo bridge for people to cross. In the summer of 1977, due to a typhoon, the bamboo bridge was washed away by flooding. At that time, the instructional director Chen Guoyi and three teachers, Zhang Jian, Deng Yuying, and Lin Baoxuan, at Shanxing Elementary School, decided to hold hands and attempt to cross the river despite the swift current. Unfortunately, in the process, they lost their footing and fell into the water, and tragically, both Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying drowned. The news shocked the entire country, and people were deeply moved by the dedication of teachers in remote areas. Upon learning of this incident, then Premier Chiang Ching-kuo decided to allocate funds to construct a concrete bridge to improve transportation for Shanxing Village, naming it the "Jianying Bridge" in memory of the two teachers who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Later, the story was adapted into a film called "Jianying Bridge," making the great spirit of sacrifice and dedication by the two teachers widely known and consequently increasing the visibility of the Fenglin area. To commemorate the two teachers, the Fenglin Township Office built Jianying Park on a small hill near the eastern end of Jianying Bridge, adjacent to the famous scenic road County Road 193 in Hualien. In addition to erecting memorial statues of the two teachers for people to pay their respects, the park also provides a pleasant recreational spot for the Fenglin area.
