Jianying Park Introduction
Between Dalongli and Shanxingli in Fenglin Township lies the Hualien River. Since ancient times, there has only been a bamboo bridge for pedestrian passage during the dry season. In the summer of 1977, a typhoon caused the bamboo bridge to be washed away by floodwaters. At that time, the academic affairs director of Shanxing Elementary School, Chen Guoyi, and three teachers, Zhang Jian, Deng Yuying, and Lin Baoxuan, attempted to cross the river by holding hands, despite the swift currents. Unfortunately, they fell into the water, and tragically, teachers Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying drowned. This news shocked the entire nation, and many admired the spirit of dedication from teachers in remote areas. Upon learning of this event, then-Executive Yuan President Jiang Jingguo decided to allocate funds to build a concrete bridge to improve transportation links for Shanxingli, naming it the "Jianying Bridge" in memory of the two teachers who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Later, this story was adapted into the film "Jianying Bridge," which made the great spirit of sacrifice and dedication of these two teachers well-known to the public, thereby increasing the visibility of the Fenglin area. To commemorate teachers Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying, the Fenglin Township Office built Jianying Park on a small hill beside the eastern end of Jianying Bridge, adjacent to the famous scenic 193 County Road in Hualien. In addition to erecting memorial statues of the two teachers in the park for public remembrance, it also created a recreational area for leisure activities in the Fenglin region.
