Jianying Park Introduction
Between Dayong Village and Shanjing Village in Fenglin Township lies the Hualien River. Historically, during dry seasons, there was only a bamboo bridge for pedestrians. In the summer of 1977, due to a typhoon, the bamboo bridge was washed away. At that time, the head of the academic affairs at Shanjing Elementary School, Chen Guoyi, along with teachers Zhang Jian, Deng Yuying, and Lin Baoxuan, attempted to cross the river hand in hand to get to school despite the rushing waters. Unfortunately, they slipped and fell into the water, resulting in the tragic drowning of teachers Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying. This incident shocked the nation, inspiring great admiration for the dedication of teachers in remote areas. Upon learning of the incident, then-Premier Chiang Ching-kuo decided to allocate funds to build a concrete bridge to improve transportation for Shanjing Village, naming it the "Jianying Bridge" in honor of the two teachers who sacrificed their lives in service. This story was later adapted into a film titled "Jianying Bridge," which further popularized the great spirit of sacrifice and dedication of these teachers and raised the profile of the Fenglin area. To commemorate teachers Zhang Jian and Deng Yuying, the Fenglin Township Office constructed Jianying Park on a small hill next to the eastern side of Jianying Bridge, adjacent to the famous scenic Route 193 in Hualien. The park features memorial bronze statues of the two teachers for people to remember and pay tribute, while also providing a new recreational spot for the Fenglin area.
