Fenglin Tobacco Barn Introduction

During the Japanese colonial period, the government encouraged people to grow and produce tobacco. In addition, in the 1960s, the government developed economic policies for the eastern region, significantly increasing the area for tobacco cultivation in Hakka villages, which led to the development of the tobacco industry and created the most densely populated tobacco processing settlements in Taiwan. The tobacco buildings in Fenglin are of the Osaka style, characterized by smokestacks that protrude from the rooftops, facilitating smoke ventilation. Currently, about 33 tobacco buildings are well preserved, blending Japanese architectural features with Hakka cultural elements. Visitors are encouraged to slow down and delve into the prosperous scene of the tobacco buildings in the past.
