The Guantian Waterhen Restoration Area is located in Guantian District. It was established with sponsorship from the Taiwan High Speed Rail and officially renamed as the Guantian Waterhen Ecological Education Park after being managed by the Tainan City Government's Agriculture Department. The park gradually advances toward ecological education and tourism, featuring not only a rich variety of aquatic plants but also many waterbird ecosystems. Among the most significant avian species is the waterhen, scientifically known as the Swamphen, which coexists with water chestnut fields. Visitors can observe the ecological wonders of the waterhen through telescopes, which often attracts numerous birdwatching enthusiasts. This species in Taiwan is unique among the eight species worldwide for having different plumage forms for breeding (summer plumage) and non-breeding (winter plumage), as well as a migratory habit. It was once commonly seen in Yilan, Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Changhua, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taitung. Due to land development and environmental destruction, it can now only be found in the water chestnut fields in the plains between the Bazhang River and the Zengwen River in Tainan. The Council of Agriculture announced the waterhen as a second-class rare and precious conservation species in 1989.
