Old City God Temple Introduction
Main Deity: Chenghuang (City God) In ancient times, Chenghuang referred to the city and its protective moat; when there was water, it was called "chi" (池), and when there was none, it was called "huang" (隍). Therefore, Chenghuang refers to the concept of the god protecting the city walls. In the belief that all things have spirits, the elevated city and the lowered moat have defensive functions and ensure the safety of the citizens. It is natural for people to worship the city. During the Ming Dynasty, a defensive garrison was established in Jinmen City, which had both a city and a large number of residents, leading to the construction of a Chenghuang Temple for city protection. Jinmen City was destroyed by bandits and warfare at the end of the Ming Dynasty and was rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty.
