Old City Cheng Huang Temple Introduction

Main Deity: City God The City God refers to the deity overseeing the city and its moat, where the presence of water is termed "池" (chi) and its absence "隍" (huang). Thus, the City God represents the protective spirit of the city. In the belief that all things possess a spirit, the elevated city and the lowered moat provide defense and maintain the safety of the populace. It is only natural for the residents to worship the city. During the Ming Dynasty, a garrison was established in Jinmen City, which had both a city and numerous inhabitants, leading to the construction of a City God Temple for protection. Jinmen City was destroyed by bandits and warfare towards the end of the Ming Dynasty, and the Qing Dynasty later rebuilt it.
