Guandi Temple Introduction

Main Deity: Chenghuang Ye (City God) The term "Chenghuang" in ancient times referred to the city and its protective moat; the moat with water is called "chi" and without water is called "huang." Therefore, Chenghuang signifies a deity that protects the city. With the belief that everything has a spirit, the elevated city and the low-lying moat serve a defensive function and ensure the safety of all the citizens. It is only natural for people to worship their city. During the Ming Dynasty, a garrison of a thousand households was established in Jinmen City, where there was both a city and numerous residents, which led to the construction of a Chenghuang Temple for city protection. The city was destroyed by bandits and warfare at the end of the Ming Dynasty, and was rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty.
