Zheng Changhua Meatball Introduction
In the oral history of Changhua County, it is recorded that in the year 1940 (Showa 15), the current heirs of Zheng Changhua Meatballs, Yang Yalan and Yang Yazhu, learned their craft from their grandfather Yang Yongxiang. After the early passing of their father, and with many siblings at home, their mother, together with the eldest son, decided to apprentice under a master craftsman in Lugang to learn the traditional snack—meatballs (pronounced as "rouwei" in Lugang dialect). After completing the arduous apprenticeship and earning the master's approval, Yang Yongxiang and his mother Xu Shutao began selling their goods on the streets, marking the beginning of a four-generation heritage of Zheng Changhua Meatballs. After 82 years, the fourth generation is now operated by the daughter and her husband, along with her mother. What has been passed down through the fourth generation is not just the traditional flavors, but also the diligent spirit of their predecessors. Even in the face of changing times and the gradual decline of traditional snacks, they continue to embody the unique spirit of innovation and adaptability that the people of Taiwan possess. They will ensure that the delicious flavor, honed over more than eighty years, continues to evolve with careful development of new techniques and offering a fresh tasting experience for their meatballs.
