Zheng Changhua Meatballs Introduction
In Changhua County, oral history records indicate that in the year 1940 (Showa 15), the current inheritors of Zheng Changhua meatballs, Yang Yalan and Yang Yazhu, learned the craft from their grandfather Yang Yongxiang. Due to their father's early death and the large number of siblings, their mother discussed with the eldest son and decided to apprentice with a master in Lugang to learn the traditional snack - meatballs (Lugang pronunciation). After completing the arduous apprenticeship and mastering the skills, Yang Yongxiang received the master's approval to start selling the meatballs on the streets with his mother, Xu Shuitao. This marked the beginning of the four-generation inheritance story of Zheng Changhua meatballs. After 82 years of tradition, Zheng Changhua meatballs are now managed by the fourth generation, consisting of the daughter and her husband along with her mother. What has been passed down through four generations is not only the traditional flavor but also the earnest and solid spirit of the predecessors. Even in the face of changing times when traditional snacks are declining, they continue to embody the unique spirit of innovation and change inherent in the people of Taiwan. They will carry on the over 80-year-old great taste while meticulously developing new techniques and offering new sensory experiences for the meatballs.
