Jilai Hunter School

Hualien Foods

Jilai, derived from the Amis language CIDAL, not only means "sun," but also symbolizes motherhood in the matriarchal Amis society. Therefore, Jilai Hunter School is not only filled with passion and energy but also aspires to protect the land and care for the people in the community like a mother protects her children. The traditional culture of indigenous people has gradually been overlooked amid modernization, and changes in the industrial structure have severely impacted the original lifestyles of the tribal people, forcing the youth to leave their hometowns for work, making it difficult to preserve the intrinsic traditional culture. In response to this, we established Jilai Hunter School, with the intention of inheritance, continuation, and protection, actively promoting the traditional culture of indigenous people, and passing on the precious knowledge, skills, life wisdom, and values of coexisting harmoniously with nature to the next generation. We also hope that by combining tradition with recreational tourism, we can bring new vitality to the community, create local job opportunities, and allow the general public to understand indigenous culture and this land from different perspectives. Jilai Hunter's experiential activities encompass both mountain and sea domains. Mountain experience activities include: fire-making, making traditional tools, plant identification, ecological tours, creating hunting traps, bow making, and more.
