Jilai Hunter School

Hualien Foods

Jilai, derived from the Amis language CIDAL, not only means "sun," but in the matriarchal society of the Amis people, it also symbolizes "mother." Therefore, Jilai Hunter School is not only full of passion and vitality but also aspires to protect the land and the people within the community, just like a mother guards her children. Traditional indigenous culture has gradually been neglected with modernization, and changes in the industrial structure have severely impacted the original lifestyles of the tribe's members, forcing young people to leave their hometowns for work and making it difficult to preserve traditional culture. In response to this, we established the Jilai Hunter School with the original intention of inheritance, continuation, and guardianship. We actively promote indigenous traditional culture and pass on the valuable knowledge, skills, life wisdom, and the values of living harmoniously with nature to the next generation. We also hope that by combining traditional practices with leisure tourism, we can bring new vitality to the tribe, promote local employment opportunities, and allow the broader society to understand indigenous culture and this land from different perspectives. The Jilai Hunter experience activities encompass both mountain and sea realms, with mountain experiences including: fire-making, making traditional spindles, plant identification, ecological tours, making hunting traps, building composite bows, and more.
