Jilai Hunter School

Hualien Foods

Jilai, derived from the Amis language CIDAL, means "sun" and symbolizes "mother" in the matriarchal Amis society. Therefore, Jilai Hunter School not only embodies passion and vitality but also aspires to protect the land and care for the people in the community, just as a mother protects her children. The traditional culture of indigenous peoples has gradually been overlooked in the face of modernization, and changes in industrial structure have severely impacted the original lifestyles of community members, forcing young people to leave their hometowns for work and making it difficult to preserve inherent traditional cultures. In response to this, we established Jilai Hunter School with the intention of heritage, continuation, and protection, actively promoting the traditional culture of indigenous peoples and passing down the precious knowledge, skills, life wisdom, and the values of peaceful coexistence and mutual prosperity with nature to the next generation. We also hope that by combining tradition with leisure tourism, we can bring new vitality to the community, promote local employment opportunities, and enable the public to understand indigenous culture and this land from different perspectives. The Jilai Hunter experiences encompass both mountain and sea activities, including forest experiences such as fire-making, crafting traditional tools, plant identification, ecological tours, making hunting traps, and creating composite bows.
