Jilai Hunter School

Hualien Foods

Jilai, derived from the Amis language CIDAL, not only means "sun," but in the matriarchal society of the Amis people, it also symbolizes "mother." Therefore, Jilai Hunter School not only possesses abundant passion and vigor but also aspires to protect the land and care for the people in the community, just as a mother protects her children. The traditional culture of Indigenous peoples has gradually been neglected due to modernization, and changes in industrial structure have severely impacted the traditional lifestyles of tribal members, forcing young people to leave their homes for work, making it difficult to preserve their inherent cultural heritage. In response to this, we established the Jilai Hunter School with the original intent of inheritance, continuity, and protection, actively promoting Indigenous traditional culture and passing on valuable knowledge, skills, life wisdom, and the values of coexisting peacefully with nature to the next generation. We also hope that by combining tradition with leisure tourism, we can bring new vitality to the tribe, promote local employment opportunities, and allow the broader society to understand Indigenous culture and this land from different perspectives. The experience activities of Jilai Hunters encompass both mountain and sea domains, with mountain experience activities including: fire-making, making traditional tools, plant identification, ecological tours, trap-making, bow assembly, and more.
