Jilayi Hunter School

Hualien Foods

Jilai, derived from the Amis language CIDAL, not only means "sun" but also symbolizes "mother" in the matriarchal society of the Amis people. Therefore, Jilai Hunter School is filled with passion and vitality, aspiring to protect the land and the people of the tribe like a mother cares for her children. The traditional culture of Indigenous peoples has been gradually overlooked amidst modernization, and changes in industrial structure have severely impacted the original lifestyles of tribal members, forcing the youth to leave their hometowns for work. This has made it difficult to preserve existing traditional cultures. In response, we established Jilai Hunter School with the intention of inheriting, continuing, and safeguarding the culture, actively promoting the traditional Indigenous culture, and passing down the valuable knowledge, skills, life wisdom, and the values of living in peace and coexistence with nature to the next generation. We hope that by combining tradition with leisure tourism, we can bring new vitality to the tribe, promote local employment opportunities, and allow the public to understand Indigenous culture and this land from different perspectives. The experiences offered by Jilai Hunter encompass both mountain and sea activities. Mountain experience activities include fire-making, making traditional traps, plant identification, ecological tours, trap-making, composite bow making, and more.
